Just wondering, with GP's now being required to see people within 48 hours if possible, what actually happens when you want to be seen, not urgently but by a specific doctor at your surgery and you are told you can't?
I ask this because I recently visited my local hospital, saw my usual consultant who gave me a couple of options of treatment for my condition, 2 of which could be administered by my GP.
My doctors operates a 'duty surgery' where you can go along and see the nurse OR a doctor, no guarentee who you'd see, now because I have a good relationship with one particular doctor, I'd like to see her to discuss the consultants recommendations, if I were to go to the 'duty surgery' I may end up seeing the nurse, who is horrible and you can't request to see the dr in the duty surgery, it's up to the receptionist.
I rang today as was told I could either come to surgery tomorrow and see the duty nurse or come on Monday and see the duty nurse! I asked if I could make an appointment with the dr I like and I was told that I'd have to try again on Monday as they don't book more than 48 hours ahead!
I thought that they weren't supposed to do this now? It'll be OK if you can actually get through on the phone on Monday, but frequently, the lines are jammed and when you get through, the book for the dr you'd like to see is booked up for the next 48 hour window and you have to wait til the next day and try again! Hubby had to see a GP recently and it took 3 weeks before he could see the GP he wanted to see, he did hot foot it to the duty surgery only for the nurse to tell him he had to see a dr and that's when he managed to get an appointment more than 48 hours ahead!
Try phoning your surgery and ask to speak to your Doctors Secretary, advise her/him that you wish to discuss your recent hospital appt and treatment options .Ask if your Doctor could phone you back for advise. Then you should be able to get appointment with them .#Good Luck.
Whilst the GP contract stipulates that patients should be seen within 48 hours it does not stipulate that patients should necessarily see a preferred GP within that time frame.
