Sorry, but is she the ONLY missing girl in the world? How about the same level of media hype for the families of other missing kids?

What is it about this case that has driven such a huge media frenzy?

Not to be wicked but was the announcement of her disapearance made on a slow news day in the UK and hence the high profile it has been given?

I feel that the huge media frenzy has been helped because they are
    1. Nice middle -class parents
    2. Have the ncessary communication skills to get media involved
    3. Rich enough to throw money at the problem (Yet strangely not rich enough to get a babysitter).
Whilst my heart goes out to them and I pray that Madeline is returned to them safe and sound, are we in danger of forgetting their neglect in leaving their infants unsupervised.
If Madeline had wandered off (and that was a real possibilty) and met with an accident (again a possibility) would they have been supported
    then?
I have NEVER left my children unsupervised and have a lot less resources than the Mc Canns.
Parents have to be responsible, my son was literally in front of me last year (aged 7) when he had a nasty accident involving a wall which collapsed on him.
I was treated by grandparents etc like a negligent mother, when the only thing my kid was doing (despite being told not to) was running in a pair of sandals. He tripped into a stone wall, which subsequently collapsed on him.
Lets not forget Ben Needham, I don't remeber there being such a frenzy then!
His mother was at least in the same building!!!

We all ere at my work wish the VERY safe return of Madeleine and the person/persons whom have taken her to face any action deemed fit by the laws of justice. There must be thousands of thread readers whom have seen the story on the news and read newspaper reports about this little girl, our hearts go out to her family/friends during this difficult time.

The debates that follow the safe return of Madeleine will no dought, try lay blame at the parents door, and how the police acted slowly to start the hunt, etc etc but all that matters at the moment is getting little Madeleine back home to the family that love and care for her.

I totally agree with Martin. I don't think at this time we should be condemning the perants. Lets just focus on the safe return of Madeline.

I wasn't condemning the parents. Just the media.

Thanks for deleting a purely constructive post.

Why don't all child abductions get this level of press interesticon? It is a fair question.

I know its a sensitive subject, but it is every bit as sensitive for OTHER families who have children who are missing, who AREN'T getting 24hr press coverage and millions of pounds pledged as reward money.

There's a suggestion that you can somehow "buy" justice, and I would have thought that cut right to the very core of the ethos of this website to be honest.

Shame on the mods for denying anyone the opportunity to express that viewpoint. If you'd like to contact me personally to discuss the matter, please do so - don't just send automated "we've deleted your post" messages, as you can neither have read nor understood the point I was making.

Some very fair points, jampot. It seems that the media circus can only graciously bestow their Attention on one child at a time (if they're photogenic), when there's no celebrity parties or royals falling out of clubs that week. If they really had any heart about children going missing or being abducted, they'd consistently campaign on behalf of children's charities, and consistently give large donations to help out those charities.

This is not a comment on the missing girl. Of course everyone wants her back safe. But the false crocodile tears of the media honestly sicken me; the way they snoop around for someone to blame, jumping on the parents, then the Portugese police, then the holidayicon resort etc., ad. inf.;the way each reporter mistily speaks of the little girl as if she were their own child; the fact that, if they really gived a damn about the feelings of the parents at this time, they wouldn't descend on the poor b******s every time they stepped into view, pushing their cameras in their faces and asking them a torrent of questions at the tops of their voices. It makes me want to turn over, or turn off, and surely that's the opposite of what the search needs right now?

It's a shame that all missing children aren't given this level of publicity, but at least we can do a small bit to help towards the awareness of the issue and be on our guard with our children at all times, turn your back for a second and they are gone, and a lot of children will go with a stranger, so even if we only serve to remind parents, when they're out shopping, in the garden and nip in for a cuppa, anytime, be on your guard.

I too have two children. When they are with me, I have left them in the house on their own for aprox. 2 mins in the 5 years they have been with me.

This was because I was living in a house with no phone, no Internet, no mobile phoneicon signal, and I needed to get back to my (burned out shell of a) house, to get some cough medicine for my eldest.

I literally ran round the corner to a friends house and asked him to phone my mother to come and look after them, while I drove the 1/2 mile to my house and back - possibly a journey that would have taken 2-3 mins.

The whole time as I was running to the friends house - literally about 4 doors down, I was panicing.

I have felt guilty ever since...and it was JUST ONE MINUTE.

However, a lot can happen in one minute, and that is why I felt so bad.

My heart does go out to her parents and to her, and I do dearly wish that she is safely returned.

Simply because our society is so twisted that a child cannot be left alone for 30 mins, does not mean that this couple are particularly bad parents at all. It may mean that they were simply too trusting.

As I said this is a subject that can,if not handled carefully become heated and this is something that has happened many times.I have other things to do than restrict expressions and its certainly not something I am here to do.Having said that many users will know why sometimes a post has to be put on hold if it clearly looks like it may invite confrontation. This was my concern here and that was the reason.
Our confrontations should be left between us and the banks.

I don't think the parents are to blame at all. If the little girl's been taken, then it is no one's fault but the abductor alone. Evil will always find a way, no matter how careful you are, or if you never let your child out of your sight; remember, for instance, the little six year old girl who was taken from her bath? In her own house, with her mother in the next room? I remember, when much younger, being put to bed in the house while my parents and grandparents had a family barbeque in the garden. I was the same distance away from them as Madeline was from her parents.

This is one of the reasons why the Blame Brigade are so hateful to me -their mongering seems to be born out of their fear that life isn't controllable, their denial of the fact that these things do happen and they are out of our power to 100% prevent. It's the fear that 'this could happen to me/my child/someone I know and love'; however, just because the Blame Brigade act out of fear, it doesn't justify the additional cruelty put upon those poor parents by their blame games.

on behalf of all decent people living EVERYWHERE, lets all hope this child is returned safe into her parents arms.
there are indeed thousands of children in this position around the globe, and in a perfect world, there wouldnt be, but whatever your beliefs, keep Maddie and EVERY other single child in your hearts.
my family and i all hope for her safe return xx

Please note that although my advice is offered, you should consult your legal representative before taking ANY action.
