    Default A&L Closing our account

    After recently winning back charges from A&L, we received in this morning's post, a letter informing us, our account would be closed from 16 April 2007, and all services withdrawn. The letter suggested we make alterantive arrangements for our future banking.

    We have already started this, but Halifaxicon won't provide us a cheque book & cheque guarantee card with the new account for some reason, and neither will they provide sufficient overdrafticon facility to pay all our monthly direct debits, purely on the basis that we don't have a cheque guarantee card, despite us agreeing to have our monthly salaries paid in each month?

    We have already drafted A&L, a letter of our disatisfaction, and advised them, the matter would be reported to the fosicon for itheir nformation and further investigation. We had hoped to keep A&L account running until everything had been transferred over and we were satisifed with Halifax.

    Guess we'll have to keep badgering Halifax now to provide us with the cheque book & card we need on occasions.

    Sorry to hear this but it does happen, they should be hammered for doing this as it is quite clearly retaliation for claiming what was rightfully yours, had read that compensation had been awarded to other claimants whose account had ben closed down of around £200, the bigger picture seems to be that the banks can do as they please in relation to account closures as they have already been fined for this action, obviously it wasnt a deterant, id like to see more action being taken against this sort of thing.

    You need to write your letter of complaint to A&L, invoke the complaints procedure, until you get a letter of "Final Decision" from them.

    Once you have that you then take your complaint to the fosicon.

    Hopefully if everybody keeps doing this the FOS will begin to escalate the level of punishment on A&L.

    Whilst you're at it a letter pointing out the juvenile actions certains banks are taking would not go amiss.

    Don't forget that you can also send a letter to the OFT, e.g.

    Dear Sir/Madam,



    I wish to inform you that I do not consider xxxxx bank to be a “fit and proper person”, therefore this organisation should not hold a consumer credit licence.

    Since June 2006 I have requested xxxxx bank repay excessive and unlawful bank charges, which they had taken from my account. They refused to do so, stating that the charges were a true reflection of there costs incurred regarding my administering of my account. The charges were for the sending of a computer generated letter notifying me of an overdrafticon or a refused direct debiticon. The charges levied were £39.00 on each occasion. By way of the service of a Subject access requesticon I discovered that no manual intervention took place on my account.

    It is apparent that xxxxxx bank are purporting that the charges levied on its customer accounts are lawful and a true reflection of the costs incurred. This is not the case, xxxx bank are merely profiteering at its customers expense. The charges levied are far in excess of any cost incurred by them; a fact that they are well aware of. Despite much press coverage and numerous claims against them, xxxx bank continue to levyicon such charges.

    I would contend that the actions of xxxxx bank are tantamount to a criminal deception.

    I ask that you investigate this matter and consider revoking the consumer credit licence of this [edited] organisation.

    Thanks Serg.
    Sent a letter off to A&L expressing our disapproval of their actions, and informing them, I would also report the matter to the OFT (who I had already spoken to landline), and received a very unusual reply from the customer service dept of A&L a couple of weeks ago.

    Their letter was an offer of £1359, which if we accepted and signed, would be deposited into our account immediately upon receipt, despite us also receiving a cheque off them the month earlier. So, we accpeted their offer, and the money was deposited into our account. We are now operating all our finances with another bank, and only hold this account open, but deposit a small amount of money in each month.

    To us it seems, one dept within A&L isn't fully aware of what the other is doing, but nevertheless, they made their offer formally in writing, and we accepted. We have kept the offer, in the event they ever ask for it back, in which case, we'll go to court.

    I would encourage everyone to complain by writing to their banks, if they are informed the account will be closed, you never know, you might get lucky as we did?
