Latest news from the Irish Republic is that the Government plan to prohibit retailers, vendors or merchants from charging a higher amount for using the card, than if they paid by any other method. This is the first salvo against firms that attempt to hike prices for customers who choose not to pay via the suppliers 'preferred' payment method.

The first UK company to be hit by this will be Sky Television, who continue to levyicon a €6 'Invoice Administration Fee' if the bill is not settled by direct debiticon. Currently this will mean if anyone in Ireland pays their Sky account with a credit card, they cannot be charged the non-DD fee.

The Government plans are expected to be on the Statute books this time next month. The business union IBEC, have voiced concerns, but it looks as though it's a done deal.

At least it's a start - but how long before the UK makes its own plans in anyones guess.
