Seazaman, you need to be aware of the what the Data Protection Act says that way you will realise that Tesco are taking the mick.
Basically, the data protection act clearly states that a data controller must disclose all information they hold on an individual providing they have been given enough information to identify them.
What this means is that all this rubbish that the banks are stalling people with saying they cannot locate an account number is neither here nor there. Providing you give them enough information to identify you, that is all they need.
Your DOB (possibly your NI number) and any addresses whilst holding the card should be sufficient. Be firm and clear - you will not accept any more delaying tactics. Also threaten them with court action for non-compliance if they don't sort things out shortly.
