Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
I got myself into a lot of financial mess last year. This prompted me to look into seeking back some overdraft charges through Barclays.
I also set up an account with Payplan (a free credit advice company) to hopefully take charge of all my debts (numerous credit card debts). Their job is to act as an intemediary and hopefully arrange credit card companies and banks to freeze interest charges and arrange repayment plans suited to what their clients can afford.
Initially I left my barclays £2000 overdraft debt out of the picture because I was hoping to pay this off with the unfair overdraft charges I had incurred over the years.
I have been through the whole process and am waiting on a court date to reclaim aroung £1500.
Barclays have still been hitting me with interest and 'paid referals' which have been swallowing up all my disposal income. So I arranged to add the debt to my Payplan plan and freeze the account.
Today I received a letter saying that the terms are unnacceptable and that I must pay off the debt immediatly. The debt is being passed onto someone to collect and I am being charged 55p per day interest each day the debt remains unpaid.
I think there is something (ask a mod) about the fact a bank can't close an account or act in that way WHILST a claim is in progress.
If this is the case, then you should be able to have this all postponed, but be aware that when it comes to it, you will probably have the account closed - they'll think of something, even if they don't use the same reason again...
Have you spoken to your payplan people - they may be able to help you also?
I would definately contact the bank and let them know that you are currently disputing the account, and find their actions worrying, and that you will report them to the financial Ombudsman due to them acting in this way against your account.
Although, having just re-read your post, if your account isn't being closed, only debt being recalled, then I don't know if the same 'rules of engagement' apply.
Sorry - not sure if I actually helped there or not!

I think Peter is right, I think someone else's thread had this and whilst the account is "in dispute" they can't claim back your overdraft! I'm sure one of the big guys on this site will help a bit more, but hopefully it might put your mind at rest!
I'm in a similar situation, lba was sent last week. Barclays informed me end of last week they have withdrawn my facilities (which is fine i do not use the account anyway) but now must repay my overdraft of £807 funny thing is they owe me £1260.
They closed my account and withdrew my overdraft when they found out I was taking them to court. I told them I wouldn't pay them the £179.00 till the dispute was settled, and in court if need be so they issued a default notice even though I am claiming over £5500 from them. They have refused to remove the default saying they are totally in there right to do this but then offered me £1000 for the third time in Full and final settlement and said if I accepted it they would mark the default as satisfied.
As my credit rating is pretty poor anyway the default can sit there for the time being and guess where I told them to shove there £1000
Now I have a court date for early April I will wait till I get judgment or they pay up early and I will ask for the default to be removed not just satisfied. If they refuse I will then start court proceedings to have it removed plus I will ask for the court to consider awarding some kind of compensation for the financial difficulty this has caused to both me and my family members.
As they have done there best to give me an hard time I will then start claiming back charges plus interest for charges older than 6 years. I have been having a look at the various threads on here regarding this on here and belief we all have a good case.
I am also going to see my MP about the banks abuse of the court system for there own means and the way they issue defaults with out any regulation or any proof of debt (if you owe me money I can't put any thing on any credit register as it has to go court and be proved first).
I will also make complaints about there handling of the dispute to as many government and official bodies as I can thing of suggestions are welcome.
As you can see they have p**sed me of and I fully intend repaying them as much as possible
I have even thought of having leaflets printed about reclaiming bank charges and handing them out side there branch's
Any way what i am trying to say is don't let them grind you down just make sure you return the favour
