Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
Could someone helps me please. We have just received a council tax bill from year 2000, this is the first notification we have heard. I would have assumed they should have chased it up sooner than seven years later.
We are not even sure that we actually owe it as our council tax is on direct debit. The request has come from a debt collecting agency and is for a substantial amount of money. My partner is is currently appealing against a small business bankruptsy with the Inland Revenue which we hopefully can sort out. But this additional debt is a great worry on top of everything else. We have not yet contacted the debt collecting agency as we are scared that they will want the full amount which we have not got and they may come and take our goods. Could anyone advise the best way forward in this situation as we are both worried sick.
I am not 100% on this but i am sure there is a law somewhere that states if a debt is not sought in the 6 (not sure) years after it is made, then there is no legal right to claim it back, hence only 6 years worth of bank charges able to claim back.
again, im not sure so please dont quote me on this, it will require some reseach on your part...

Don'tthink this applies to Council TAx - I'l lsee what I can find out.
I would speak to the counci land ask them to clarify the amount due.
Thanks for your help on this one. Could I send the template letter saying we will pay something or is it too late? Paying to bailifs is not a good idea I have seen from the forum, how do I go about paying direct to the council?
Automatic banking and telephone banking has been mentioned on other threads, sorry to sound dumb, but what is this?????
