Default DVLA - SORN Notice not received

Hello everyone, I sent a SORN notice to DVLA in October 06. In January this year they have written to me asking for 80 quid for failure to re-licence or submit a SORN.

I have written to them to tell them that a sorn ws sent to them, as the vehicle was in an accident and off the road for repairs.

They have written back saying that I still have to pay the 80 quid fine, and that it is up to me to ensure the SORN has been received and processed by them.

Has anyone any ideas how to play this one? Would they get anywhere if they go to court?

    Hope someone can help. Thanks.

If you sent the SORN notice in by post then you need to reiterate to them that you complied with the requirement to either SORN or re-licence the car. As to their comment that "it is up to me to ensure the SORN has been received and processed by them" what exactly do they expect you to do, deliver it to Swansea in person? What nonsense they use to try and extract more money out of you!

Write back and tell them you sent the notification first class post (which is the same method they use for sending out reminders). You did your bit, but DVLA have failed to do theirs by not processing the SORN. If they insist then take it further up the food chain there.

You do get an receipt for the SORN, and are asked to allow so many weeks for one. Whether the responsibility to keep a track of this is another matter.

There is also a facility to notify SORN online now:-

    default | Home

They send an e-mail in response to your notification so you have instant proof that you have done it. I personally would be loath to send anything in the post to DVLA unless I have no other choice. They are so inefficient ,except when it comes to giving out keeper details to the dodgy private car parking companies out there, or sending out fines.

You can SORN at a PO and they provide a receipt. By post - well, you have a reasonable expectation that if you sernd a SORN to them they will perocess it, to it may be a hard won battle to challenge it - butr the whole system sucks, and like TV licencing, you're deemed guilty automatically without proof.
