    Hi, i have been pondering a long time before i send in my second letter, because i was told that i cant claim back money for some direct debits that i was charged for because the money was not in the bank at the tiime the direct debits went in for payment, yet the bank has charged me the exact amount that the unpaid direct debiticon was for ie one was for £55 and because the money was not in the acount i was charged £55 by the bank and the direct debit was left unpaid can anyone put me right before i send in my second letter as i dont want to make a fool out of myself

    No I've not heard that before? Lloydsicon' returned direct debiticon charges are £35 per item. Are you sure it's not referring to the amount of the direct debit that had to be returned? Usually when an item like that is returned it takes it out first- so using your example will show up as taking out a direct debit of £55 - then if there's not enough money there they return it and the £55 shows up as being a credit. Have you got your statements to refer to?

    I assume it was the bank who told you that you can't claim back money for returned direct debits when you didn't have the money there. Don't listen to them - it makes no difference the circumstances you were under which meant that you went overdrawn or had an item returned, the charges are still unlawful.

    thanks lucid i am going off now to look for the staments before i do anything else as i think i am getting a bit confused so can i actually claim back the unpaid dd charges ?

    Hi margy,

    Yes any returned item fees are reclaimable and these are unpaid direct debits, standing orders and cheques. Also overdrafticon excess fees are reclaimable.
