Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
Dear All,
I have been on nights, and just got a phone call from my partner to say when he tried to use my card, it was declined. So, I check my balance, worried to say the least, as its pay day today! The balance is 0 on the telebanking, which is very odd as I have an overdraft aswell. I stay on hold, and get told that they cant tell me what has happened, I have to ring this number.
Cue very worried me. Rang the number, and I get through to a load of options 'if you have had fraud of over 10,000 please press this number' blah blah blah. Im sitting literally sh*tting myself with worry, finally get through.
I am told my card has been cancelled and account suspended because it was suspected my card was cloned in a retailer I had visited in the last few months
So, great, I check my account with them, and nothing unusal has happened. I now have to wait for a new card to come through (although I needed a new card, my sig has rubbed off the old one, and its got a big crack near the chip bit!). So here I am, with no friggin money. Im starving, no food in the house, child to feed too, childminder is supposed to be paid today, and Ive got to wait til monday before the branch is open for me to get any money out!!!
I dont know whether to be angry or what! Im happy they have informed me of the suspected fraud, but at the same time, there was absolutely no suspicious activity on the account, all the regular places I shop at, and regular DD's are there, all in my home town.
They said they couldnt tell me details, only that its a huge police investigation into fraud, and that it was with one retailer, but it was an individual or group of employees.
Just because there was no transactions doesn;t mean there couldn;t be any! As a precaution once a timeframe for fraud has been establishment the banks do all they can to reissue all the cards that went through just in case there's been a stockpile od numbers cloned and they'll be the next to be used. I agree though, it is a pain and a parachute account with another card is always good to have.
I agree entirely with Buzby but I guess the question you would have asked if fraud had happened on the account and the bank were aware of information that could have pertained to it would be, why did they not do enough?
Also, surely if it is suspected that there is the possibility of a third party committing fraud with the card, the person holding the account has a right to know the details of why they are being left without money for the whole weekend.
the reason they are without money is that the card has been stopped and a new one issued as a result. Unless the OP is able to get to a branch of that bank tomorrow which they may not due to work commitments that is why they are without cash. Does that make sense?

May make sense - but doesn't feed the children - surely if cards etc were being stopped then the bank should contact the card holder and make them aware that they need to get into a branch or make alternative arrangements for cash.
if you live near peterborough - it's probably the shell fuel garage's [problem] - staff have been cloning cards at these petrol stations - about 1 million has been stolen
I give in on threads re fraud. My knowledge is widespread on this but I am not prepared to post on an open forum of the methods involved and the things that are used with regards to banks fraud process.
The only thing I will reiterate is that you would tear to shreds a bank who knew of a potential of cards being cloned and done NOTHING about it.
Nattie, I think you have misunderstood what I am saying. I am glad the card has been stopped, but it was very frightening to wonder where on earth my whole months wages had disappeared to. Then to not get answers from the first person I spoke to...
Also, to be left with no money. Luckily, my mum has stepped in, but how embarrasing as a grown adult with a family, to be left in a position to ask your parents for some cash to get food and petrol to see me through the weekend. Im glad I didnt have plans for this weekend, well, not plans that couldnt be cancelled anyway. But what a boring weekend, stuck in!
What worries me, is that they said this was a retailer in the last few MONTHS! Its obviously taken them some time to cancel cards.... The least they could have done would be to phone me to inform me. First we knew of anything wrong was when the card was declined, in my partners workplace! Very embarrasing!
Since you want to get pedantic about it, I meant that the person who has been whose cards the bank has found it necessary to cancel and reissue, leaving them without access to funds (unless they have access to a branch open on Saturday), must surely have a right to know what has happened for the bank to find it necessary to do so.
I was slightly harsh on my posts so apologies if OP felt upset or annoyed in anyway. I appreciate when the bank cancel a card especially at the weekend that it is frustrating and I wish I could say the various steps that are involved in the process. It would be annoying if the bank did nothing and allowed fraud to take place when informaton pertaining to was given by the authorities.
meagain- I am sure we can argue(sorry but I haven't read past the words "if we want to get pedantic". I have been caught out too many times on the threads getting involved in something that I should have best left alone, and on this occasion with a bit of food in the stomach and a long Friday at work, I know when to avoid the arguments.
EDIT: I was a bit moody last night. The bank should and normally do make every effort to contact the customer on cards stopped but many telephone numbers on customer's account are either wrong, not there or no longer in use. I appreciate it does not help the OP and it does not feed the kids but better to be safe than sorry.
