My 17r old son has just passed his driving test, 1st time after roughly 25 lessons.

Asked for a quote to have him addded to his dads insurance so he can share his car. ( auto direct )

His dad pays annualy £166 fully comp.

They now want £1066 annualy.

How on earth is anyone gonna afford to pay that for god sake,

Anyone know any cheeper.

Brecken xx

Brecken I just insured my two sons with Tesco 1 is 23 and the other 17 and not passed his test yet, cost £670, it was over £1000 on mine and OH coz we both have 3 points for speeding. Also try confused.com for a good range of prices.

My OH is 24, and is buying a new car in a few weeks time. The cost to add this new car onto his policy and remove the old one is horrendous to start with! but what I have a problem with is that as soon as he hits the magical 25, his insurance costs will plummet to an actually comfortable level. How does the new Age Discrimination Act come into play here, I wonder? Is it fair, or even legal, to charge male drivers under 25 extortionate amounts to insure their cars, just on the basis of statistical analysis of accidents? Statistically, young black males living in Central London are more likely to be 'your' mugger than a young white male in CL - should that necessitate an automatic caution/charge on a YBM's criminal record regardless of a crime being committed, just because it's statistically more likely? I'm just using the above as an example; I would like to know peoples' views on this. I was knocked sideways when OH told me t'other day that his insurance would go down by about £800 on his 25th birthday...! :o

I think something similar went through the courts with the EU, on the basis that male drivers are charged more than female drivers. This was tried as sexual discrimination, but the Insurers won, on the basis that male drivers are more likely to speed, etc. and statistically more likely to be involved in an accident. It can be the same with age

Abbey - owed £3260 - Paid up.

Barclays owed £2500 - Paid up.

Halifax, Mint & Egg - next on the hit list

Dont click on the scales - I'm quite proud of my little red dot! - As the little red dot has gone - click away!!!!

Ahh young drivers. I certainly understand the points made from the gentleman about the increase about his car insurance with his son. Unfortunately, young drivers do have the highest claim rates across all drivers, and when they do crash the cars, they tend to be big accidents.

If your son is a responsible driver (which i hope he is) there are 2 options for him.

1. To sit a pass plus, which many companies give a discount for

2. NOrwich Union Direct do a pay as you drive policy. Which may be benficial to your son. As long as he drives at normal hours and avoids the night time hours when young drivers are more prone to accidents he should be ok.

Unfortunately this is the state of things for young drivers.

As for discounts to females. they have historically been proven to be "safer drivers", however looking at the ladette culture this is now changing.
