Hi all,
I subscribed to this great site last October and immediately sent a letter to Natwestbased on one of the templates. I was asking them for roughly £65 worth of charges + 8% interest
dating back from August 2001. I had two direct debits bouncing because my credit card balance was cleared that month just before pay day. The balance was a bit bigger than usual which I didn't realise until it was too late and got hit by £25 fees and nasty unarranged borrowing interest rates. I went overdrawn for a couple of days, for the first time in 6 years
. I immediately switched bank.
Natwest replied 2 weeks later saying that they apologised for my dissatisfaction caused and that they believes their charges were fair, reasonable and transparent. They also thanked me for taking the trouble to write! They included a leaflet "your complaint and the Ombudsman" in case I wanted to take the matter further.
I read more about the subject and decided that I'd send them a final letter, threatening to take them to the small claims court. I claimed for £92 in total. I know the amount is minimal but it was mostly for the principle, this made me very angry at the time and time had not healed this completely.I gave them 7 days to respond otherwise I'd have to go to the small claims court.
Yesterday (12 days after I posted the letter by registered post), I got a letter back offering me £64.67 (to accept within one month), i.e. all fees without interest. It stated that this was offered as a gesture of goodwill and without admission of liability or error.
I will accept this offer and forget about the interest even though I believe they are legally required to pay this if I went to court. I will then close my account and make a donationto this site
Many thanks again - my advice is that it pays to be tenacious, but be courteous, patient and confident that the law is on your side
