Hi, first post and hopefully a positive one at that!
Ive been a customer of Ulsterbank for some 15 odd years basically since i was in secondary school earning a part time wage. Early on charges and finance in general was never a problem. A few years ago (maybe 4) My bank manager brought me in for a service review and advised me to open a second account and use it for direct debits and standing orders and in his words to "operate in cash only from the first account" which was the Ufirst account. The 2nd account was setup and he moved all my automated debits into it and setup a standing order to move £1100 from the no1 acct to the new no.2 account. within a month I was receiving charges again stating that not enough money was in the second account to fully pay all the debits. It seems some of my direct debits were fluctuating in amounts, I ended up just adding money as and when it was needed. A couple of years ago I got a loan to buy a new car and have never missed a payment. Fed up with all the charges id been getting over the last decade or so I opened a new account( approx feb '06) with the Halifax who gave me a £1000 overdraft and did the automated account swapover, all was running smooth again until a few months later my no1 account was sat around £600 over drawn and my no.1 account which had a couple of pounds to the good in it when i last looked was now sat at -£150 or so with no overdraft facility, talk about being absolutely gobsmacked!!. It turns out that the car loan account "Expects" the money to come from my no.1 account into the no.2 account then across into the loan account monthly, because it was now coming from the halifax, on the correct date, i was getting £30 charges as if i hadnt been paying it at all.
More recently Ive been getting letters weekly telling me they are charging me for this and that, The straw that broke the camels back came a fortnight ago when I received a "legal" letter from them stating that my car loan account, Ufirst account and current accounts were all in arrears and that they wanted it all paid back in full (circa £10K!!!). I got advice from a fellow golfer friend and wrote out a letter requesting a refund of all charges for the last 12 years (i thought it was 6years, but was advised to push for 12years) I posted the letter on the 3rd, it was signed foro on the 4th so i gave them a couple of days and phoned them back to find the letter hadnt made the debt recovery dept, I did get through to a decent girl who, when i informed her of the letter, asked me if she could ring me back after lunchtime so she could pull my accounts and see what went wrong. Sure enough just after 1pm she phoned back and refunded me £1067 which brought my two accounts back to the way they should have been since i moved to the halifax, this refund included monies i had put into the second account to try to resolve the situation before hearing about the refund process. All good so far, but this was only backdated to february 06, she advised me to send the letter again, addressed to the queries and concerns dept in danesfort, belfast and they would review and action my concerns (and request for a few grand in charges back please!) so, letter has gone and am waiting on word back early next week, between that phonecall and sending the letter, i got a reply from my branch manager saying he is now going to investigate my accounts and will get back to me in the next couple of weeks.
Phew, I cant believe i just typed that, things are looking a lot better now that the accounts are back to a decent state, if anyone was in doubt whether to go for it, you should now know the answer.
got a no thanks back from UB so DPA has been printed and cheque written.
Time to go to war vs
Ulsterbank
Citicards MBNA because of the gvi incident and charges. Halifax (simply because they charged me £67 for one missed DD and a random charge that they wont refund.)
Only just found your details and understand your predicament. Have had stalling tactics from ulsterbank and today is the day I should be receiving my information so that I may proceed (so far nothing). I sent my first letter on the14 march and 40 days expired yesterday but decided to allow postage time. This is a joint account and we have always been able to access the account without the others permission so I sent of first letter with only my name. Received letter from Ulster bank dated 2nd of April, APOLOGISING FOR DELAY,advising they need both signatures to go forward and request for back statements would only commence after they received that letter, I don,t think so!!!!! Contacted Information Commissioners Office and was told this was a stalling tactic. They told me to proceed with original timescale and quote ' data protection act 1998, part 2, subsection 7, paragragh 4b. Forgot to mention their letter dated 2nd April did not arrive until 20th April- 5 days before 40 day expiration. Told bank they appeared to have an internal postage problem they may want to investigate- lol. I wrote back saying sticking to original blah blah blah and would be expecting information as previously dictated by act. Fingers and every other part of body possible crossed. Heres hoping but not holding my breath.
