Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
Just started out on this a few weeks back and have now got my statements from the Bank of Scotland going back six years. After receiving them I happily discovered all my statements from 1990 to 2000 stashed in a box
Anyways... there doesn't seem to be a BOS centric guide around so thought I'd post the types of charges which I know are relevant (read as claimable) and hopefully others can add to them.
Something changed around mid May 2004 when they started listing all charges in statements as 'Charges as Notified'. You're supposed to know what the charge is for from the letter they sent you saying they'll take the charge from your account in seven days. However, in my experience, you can make a satisfactory guess from the amount charged. These are detailed in the post mid-May 2004 section below.
Pre Mid-May 2004
EXCESS O/D CHARGE : £15 rising to £20 around '98
Every time you go over your overdraft limit
CHGS REFUNDED : £??
RFND XS CHG : £??
REFUND XS OD CHG : £??
Those occasions when you whinged like hell to the Phoneline and they made a token refund - these go down as a negative value in the spreadsheet
RECALL S/O CHG : £20 rising to £25 around '96
When you didn't have enough funds to pay a standing order and they 'recalled' it
RETD D/D CHG : £25
When you didn't have enough funds to pay a direct debit and they 'returned' it
Post Mid-May 2004
Charges as Notified : £20 rising to £30 2005
When they pay a DD/SO even though you're overdrawn in excess
Charges as Notified : £28
Same as EXCESS O/D CHARGE
Charges as Notified : £30 rising to £35 around mid-2004 now £39
A returned DD/SO due to insufficient funds
Some time around mid-2000 to mid-2001 they replaced the quaint monthly itemised total charge that was incurred when you went overdrawn, with a flat 'Account Maintenance Charge' of £15 rising to £28 in April 2003. This was then replaced mid-May 2004 with the 'monthly unauthorised overdraft charge' of £28 which showed on your statement as Charges as Notified : £28
That last paragraph is a long winded way of saying not to forget the entry 'Charges to ??date??' that appeared on your statement from around mid-2000 / mid-2001 until mid-May 2004
Hope that helps someone and please do add/correct!

The monthly itemised total charge that I refer to was only charged to you if you became overdrawn. It was a charge per item of things such as direct debits, standing orders, keycard withdrawals, switch transactions, automated and non-automated pay ins and an account maintenance charge. This was then totalled up as the 'Total Charge' and debited from your account two weeks later.
