    Angry Norwich Union/Cunningham Lindsey

Well where to begin. Firstly wasnt too sure where to post this and if anyone can offer any advise or not.

My parents started a claim four years ago with their insurance company due to subsidence on their house. Norwich Union appointed Cunningham Lindsey as the loss adjustors for the claim.

When the work began approxiamately 20 months ago everything seemed to be ok. The house was underpinned, my parents were forced to live in only two rooms of the house whilst the work was done. This was due to the fact that the floorboards were lifted in the main living room and two of the bedrooms. Additionally, the walls were hacked backed to the bare brick work. However, 20 months down the line the situation is still the same! My parents are still living in two rooms they have not been able to use the front room ( so no sitting on sofa to watch tv) since June 05. The house is cold , dark, damp and dusty. Plus scaffolding has been on the house now for nearly a year!

What went wrong....well in April 06 the old wood sash windows were removed and new UPVC windows put in. Surprise, surprise though the windows didnt fit, they were too small and big gaps have been left around the windows. Additionally, as the old windows formed part of the support system for the 1st floor no additional support has been put in place yet.

I could go on tell you more hash ups that have taken place but dont think that there is enough room on here for me to put them all.

Cunningham Lindsey have not been at all helpful. I am unable to work out if it is imcompentence or just being totally obstructive. Norwich Union has now appointed one of their claims investegators as a go between. Thererefore, his role is meant to be moving the job along and acting as a go between. He however, does not have any building knowledge and therefore is taking all his advice from Cunningham Lindsey.

So far my parents have had 4 different contracts managers (as they call themselves) appointed by Cunningham Lindsey to try and sort it.

As you can imagine I am extremely concerned about my parents. They are both in their mid- late 60's. My fathers suffers with extremely high blood pressure and has been having lots of angina attacks recently. My mother has just also been diagnosed with high blood pressure and is also now on beta blockers. I have tried to no avail to intervene and move things along with Cunningham Lindsey. I even tried appealing to their better nature and voiced my concerns around my parents health and the detrimental effect this is having on them but they just dont seem to give a damm. I can only see if as a matter of time before either one or both of my parents are seriously ill. Additionally, you can imagine the effect this is having on their mental well being.

My question is has anyone else suffered the same similar problems as my parents? Does anyone have any ideas what to do? We have contacted the Ombudsmanicon who have a 2-3 year waiting list. If my parents were to engage a solicitor it could take 2 - 3 years to go through court.

It seems that Cunningham Lindsey and Norwich Union can treat their customers in any manner they see fit without any recourse. Another example of the BIG boys against the little people. My parents have manged to get to their complaint escalated to the CE of Norwich Union who passed it back down to the local manager level.

I am sorry if this post is a bit of a ramble but there has been so much that has happened and as you can imagine I and my parents are totally at a loss as to what to do just so that we can get the house in a liveable, safe state.

Thanks for reading and as I said not sure whether I could post this kind of problem here but, I have surfed the net non stop trying to find the appropriate website/forum to post on to try and get some help.

Once again thanks and take care.

Woops can this be moved to the insurance/assurance companies thread, soz posted in wrong one.thanks

There's no reason why they should put up with this - and interaction with CL is pointless as they only will respond to their employers, NU. Your folks will need to WRITE to NU by Recoreded Delivery, outlining the basics, that their home remains unusable as a domicile due to the nature of the work, and the fact the delays have far outweighed the time workers were attempting remedial action.

You then give them 21 days to outline their proposals to rectify all problems and provide a schedule of when the work will be completed. If there is no satisfactory reply, they will employ an external contreactor ofd their own to complete the work, and all costs of the work will be passed to NU. Should payment not be forthcoming, a Court Action will bve raised without further notice. You do hope this will not be necessary etc etc, but time is now of the essence.

    That should get their attention!

I was in a similar situation last year after a house fire. Two adults + 3 kids living in the lounge with kitchen and downstairs loo. The insurance was with Churchill and they appointed a cra* loss adjuster and building company. Basically after about 12 weeks with little progress I wrote to the CE and lots of other high ups at Churchill and told them that the situation was completely unsatisfactory and we wanted alternative accomodation - they refused but promised to hurry up the builders. It finally took 26 weeks before the house was back to normal but I persisted and they ended up compensating us to the tune of £200 for every week we suffered (as I argued that this sum was a reflection of what it would have cost them to put us in alternative accomodation). Might be worth your folks saying they cannot live like this any more and pushing for the insurance co to fund alternative accomodation and ask for a different firm of contractors - keep going back to the head office, don't be fobbed off by local managers.

I would have thought that almost 3 years later they would have sorted it...

    Hi

Our complaint has been ongoing for 13 years with these two useless companies. We have managed to get the house underpinned with the help of a good solicitor but the standard of work is non-existent - there is no standard! Why can't we all get together to take action?
