    Default Alliance & Leicester

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alliance & Leicester plcTypePublicFounded1997HeadquartersLeicestershire, United KingdomKey peopleSir Derek Higgs, Chairman
Richard Pym, CEOIndustryFinance and InsuranceProductsFinancial ServicesEmployees6,262Websitewww.alliance-leicester.co.ukAlliance & Leicester plc (LSE: AL.) is a British bank, formerly a building society.
It was formed in 1997 by the floatation of the former Alliance & Leicester Building Society on the London Stock Exchange. It is listed on the FTSE 100. Its headquarters are in Carlton Park, a business park in Narborough, south of Leicester in England.
    The four business sectors are:
    1. mortgage lending & investments,
    2. personal banking,
    3. commercial banking
    4. treasury.
The Group provides general insurance, life assurance, unit trusts, personal current accounts and credit cards, asset financing and commercial lending. Its main business is in the United Kingdom concentrating on mortgages, current accounts, savings and insurance products.
The former building society was formed by the merger of the Alliance Building Society (originally based in and called the Brighton & Sussex) and the Leicester Building Society on October 1, 1985 [1]. In 1990, the society acquired Girobank, a major banking services provider to small businesses from the Post Office. With other large building societies such as the Halifax and Woolwich, the Alliance & Leicester decided to float the society on the London Stock Exchange, generating windfall payments to members worth up to £5,000 each. Floatation took place on April 21, 1997, and the company entered the FTSE 100.
In the years after floatation, the Alliance & Leicester has not been a star performer in the banking world. Its small size means it cannot compete with the larger UK banks on a large scale. However, restructuring and the booming UK housing market has powered profit growth.
On January 26, 2006, Alliance & Leicester announced that they were cutting around 350 jobs from their Merseyside offices,[2] despite being official sponsors of the 2008 European Capital of Culture, Liverpool.
Alliance & Leicester are the principal sponsors of Leicester City, with the club shirt carrying the logo.
Alliance & Leicester has a subsidiary operating in the international market and based on the Isle of Man.

I am awaiting back Bank Statements from A&L. We are reliant on the State Pension and try though I may all too often the arrival of funds does not coincide with direct debits. The resultant charges then snowball and all too often result in further charges. Because we have virtually no disposable income it is almost impossible to escape from this spiral. Arepayment of charges would make a huge difference. Poppycock.

If it is state benefit the bank cannot take that for charges.

I am very interested in what you say Nattie. The bank statements arrived on 27th. Jan.-a good fortnight sooner than I expected. It is even worse than we thought. In six years we have been docked £2245-over £2000 in five years. This is entirely from State Benefits income. Does anyone else know more about this. I have now completed "the letter" and statement of disputed charges but I have not mentioned the benefits issue until I am sure of the facts.

Re A&L. After all the usual letters treating one ever more like an imbecile I have now sent the claim forms off to Leicester C.C. I hope we dont have to go trecking down to Leicester but we are quite prepared to. Watch this space! The final total with interesticon is £2861.87. Poppycock.

Hi there. I have received all my statements from A&L and just put all the costs on to a spread sheet. But I do not know whether to add interest before I send it off to them, requesting payment. The total amount would be around £1900. Do I just add 8% to this?

I'm a relative newbie to this, but I also have an issue with the A&L taking money from an account that only has Income Support and Tax Credits going in. Is there something in writing somewhere stating that they can't take State Benefits for Bank charges? If so, where can I find it?
I know of scores of people in this situation, and some of them have even had to go to IS and Tax Credits to ask for Giro payments because their benefit was swallowed by bank charges.

    Default Gillymca v A&L

    Hi everyone

I have heard a lot about this site and hope like others you can help me through the process of taking A&L to court. The story so far is i am claiming £2700 from them, I have gone through all the first stages and I have even offered to accept a payment of £2500. Just had letter back from them offering me £1089 saying that most of my charges were due to me not having sufficient funds in my account. Obviously i am not going to accept this amount. Is there a standard letter i send back to them refusing this amount? and what is most likely to happen next. Appreciate any help and advice.

    Thanks gilliymca

Hi. I have been registered on this site for quite a while but this is the first post i have done. I need some help! I have just received a "general form of judgment or order" from my local county courticon in hull. I did not need to fill in an AQ and now need to get my paper work in order by 17 August at 16.00. My bundle is well on its way and have sent a "nudge" letter to my banks solicitors but I am missing A&L's terms and conditionsicon, which needs to be included in my bundle. Does anyone have these? I am desperate!!!

Sorry if this has been sent wrong! Am very new to this posting thing!

There's a pdf of their terms and conditionsicon here: http://www.alliance-leicester.co.uk/...curraccseomenu
(The link is too long, so you have to paste it into your browser)
We have just been offered a settlement of £2,200 from the Ombudsmanicon. This was more than the amount we claimed (we didn't put the interesticon on, but the Ombudsman obviously did.
So my advice to gillymca and rose31 is to try the Ombudsman if you haven't already.
    Good luck!

I think my claim might have gone too far now, my documents need to be handed to the court this friday, then A&L have 28 days to file and serve there response. I will give the Ombudsmanicon a call tomorrow tho and hope for the best. Thanx for the advice and Well done on your settlement!!!

I am pretty new to this and have moved my banking from Nationwideicon to A&L only to find that the bank charges are spiralling out of control. I would be very grateful for any advice as to how to start claiming back and where to find a decent bank.
