Actually that's something which matters a lot less in an EV.

Quite true in fuel efficiency of use - far far far better than diesel or petrol.

I was thinking more of sitting in traffic in the dark and cold using headlights and heater - even when stationary.

Internal Combustion engines of course produce significant heat as a by product - so apart from the very small energy cost of the fans (which loss electric vehicles would also have) - is effectively 'free' in mileage terms. Electric vehicle need to generate the heat from the available charge/range.

and the reduction in range compared to overall mileage available from using headlights is also tiny in IC engines - significant in electric.

Electric batteries of course generate most heat when its not needed - on charging, or when they are overloaded.

I think a number of the Calfornia vehicles also have the solar roofs - not worth the extra weight here :-/

Fair point but as I live in a rural area it doesn't happen like that for me. What does happen as I drive into the local towns is that constant slow down, speed up, slow down again in traffic at which point the car is recharging through the regenerative braking every time I take my foot off the accelerator.

The current generation couldn't be forced upon people as an only car. Where I think they should be used more is as a short term hire car. I drive past a huge (and always near empty) car park for park and ride when I go to Cambridge. People don't want to use the bus if they're going in to shop. I sometimes need to return to my car two or three times with shopping and I couldn't carry it all in one trip on a bus. That park and ride system could easily be a 'park and drive an EV' - a bit like Boris bikes. It would cut down on emissions in towns and cities which is what the government wants.
