Survivors, bereaved families and community will help determine the future of the Grenfell Tower site

Government reaffirms commitment to putting survivors, bereaved families and the community at the heart of deciding what happens to the future of the Grenfell Tower site.

The government has today (1 March 2018) reaffirmed its commitment to putting survivors, bereaved families and the community at the heart of deciding what happens to the future of the Grenfell Tower site.

A set of written principles, agreed with the community and signed by government and Kensington and Chelsea council, will guide the way future decisions are made.

The common assumption is that the decision-making process on the future of the site will lead towards agreement on a fitting memorial to remember those who lost their lives.

Grenfell one year on

Statement by the Rt Hon James Brokenshire MP, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.

With permission, Mr Speaker, I would like to make a statement on the government’s response to the Grenfell Tower fire, meeting our commitment to update the House following the Opposition Day debate on the 16th of May.

I am also writing to the Chair of the Select Committee to provide a formal report on progress, a copy of which will be placed in the House library.

As we mark a year since that tragedy, this will be an extremely painful time for the community.

Many honourable members provided powerful and poignant contributions in the e-petition and Opposition Day debates last month.

And I know that the whole House will join me in sending the bereaved and survivors our love and prayers.

James Brokenshire publishes consultation on banning combustible cladding

he Housing Secretary has announced a consultation on banning the use of combustible materials on the external walls of high-rise residential buildings.

A consultation on banning the use of combustible materials on the external walls of high-rise residential buildings which are 18 metres or over has been published today (18 June 2018).

This was announced in Parliament by the Housing Secretary, Rt Hon James Brokenshire MP.

The cladding believed to have been used on Grenfell Tower was unlawful under existing building regulations and should not have been used. The government wants to ensure that there is no doubt about which materials can be used on high-rise residential buildings.

This consultation is inviting views on our proposals to revise the building regulations to ban the use of combustible materials in the inner leaf, insulation and cladding that are used in external wall systems on these buildings.

Environmental checks around Grenfell Tower

Quote

Update on Stage 1 of the environmental checks around the Grenfell Tower site including the initial findings

Grenfell - Stage 1 environmental checks

Environmental checks in and around the Grenfell Tower site were announced last October and have been carried out over the spring and summer of 2019.

This is a two-stage process and the laboratory analysis of Stage 1 by the independent specialist AECOM is now complete and the preliminary data is now available. This information will let us know if the soil has been contaminated by the Grenfell Tower fire and whether there are any health risks as a result.
