I'm about to start trying to reclaim charges but, due to my current financial situation, am slightly concerned about the possibility of Barclays closing my account. Do they tend to do this?
I intend to open a parachute account just in case but as I currently have a large overdraft with Barclays I am concerned about the possibility of them closng my account.
Barclays do not, as a general rule, close accounts. Once an account is in dispute, as yours will be, the Banking Code encourages the Banks not to do anything detrimental to it.

Well done for setting up a parachute account. They're probably not going to close it but if they do, they can't demand all the money back in one go anyway - if they try, simply tell them you can't pay all that back and offer them a monthly payment you can comfortably afford. If they refuse this and then take you to court they will be very likely to lose.
