hi. looking for some advise. I have had the sheriff officer at my door today. I was out at work and my neighbour saw them. They asked who lived there (just moved in) and my name. She never told them anything and said no one new has moved in.

I have got married and they have my maiden name. Nothing has been put through my door and as far as they are concerned I'm no there. To be honest I don't know if it was the sheriff officer, but the only debt I left at my old address was my council tax. So I am putting 2 and 2 together.

Do you think they will come back? They don't know where I work and everything is under my married name anyway. Help

DCA's view debtors as suckers, marks and mugs

NO DCA has ANY legal powers whatsoever on ANY debt no matter what it's Type

and they

are NOT and can NEVER  be BAILIFFS. even if a debt has been to court..

If everyone stopped blindly paying DCA's Tomorrow, their industry would collapse overnight...

right so you don't know who called

the sheriffs office that could be chasing a CCJ as an HCEO

or 'a sheriff' officer chasing old ctax.

not in Scotland are you?

who told you it was a sheriff anyway? and how do they know?

just don't have the money to pay it just now. If it was the sheriff I am more then happy to make payments. Nothing has been put through my door though

Fair enough just wondered..of course your stance will increase the debt if it was a Bailiff with collection fees...and they will find you eventually and you will have to pay it.It would be a lot less stressful and cheaper to contact the Council and make an arrangement to pay...if it wasn't a Bailiff or connected to outstanding CTax.

Yeah I know. I'm just very embarrassed needing to call them. :-( I think I was hoping that because I have changed name and address (moved to a different council area) they wouldn't find me!

Oh well, hopefully they will send me a letter and I can arrange payments. Or I might just bite the bullet and phone the council to arrange payments. What's the least I can offer them?

moved to the dealing with debt in Scotland forum.

go ring the council

how much do you owe?

and when from.

the issue here is unless you get something moving FAST

they WILL arrest wages and bank accounts and take what they like when they like

go ring the council NOW.

there are no additional fees in Scotland.

1999!

so you've avoided this till now or is this other ctax sums added to it?

so its just one year that you didn't pay? 1999

Local authorities can apply for a summary warrant to collect outstanding monies from council tax up to 20 years after the amount has become due, and then have up to a further 20 years to collect thereafter.

No. I've been paying it at £40 per month. When I moved I stopped paying. The debt was over 9k. My ex left me with it all. It was in my name only 🙁 What if I just start saying it again, would this avoid any further action or will I need to phone them
