Stiffer penalties for using mobile devices while driving

Drivers caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel now face tougher penalties.

From today (1 March 2017) both the fine and penalty points will double - from £100 to £200 and from 3 to 6 points.

Between 1 and 7 March Devon and Cornwall Police and Dorset Police roads policing alliance will be out on the region’s roads ensuring compliance with the new legislation. The option of taking an awareness course and not receiving points on the driving license will no longer be offered

Anyone who gets caught twice using a mobile device while driving will, with the new tariff of six penalty points, find that their license will be revoked. Newer drivers, if they get caught within two years of passing their test, will have their license taken for a first offence and will have to retake their driving test.

doubt many take notice, sights seen while out of drivers on their phones and bust roads, one hand on steering wheel and having to stuggle to maintain the vehicle :(

I myself think should be banned instantly, not as that will stop many, same as drink driving, in some countries you are not allowed one drink if you drive!

I don't use my mobile when I'm driving and think it's dangerous. But how many people have they actually caught?

It doesn't seem to be much of a deterrent as you see people on their phones all the time, even when they have a perfectly serviceable passenger who could probably act as intermediary.

I often see people talking on their mobiles whilst driving and don't quite understand why this need to do so.

It does make you wonder how we coped before mobiles were invented!

On the day that these new penalties started, I watched a bus driver in Stoke on Trent using a mobile, in what, apparently, seemed like text mode, whilst at the wheel of his bus.

Last Friday, I stood in a shop, gazing out of the window, and in ten minutes, I observed six drivers using a mobile, one eating toast whilst driving, one drinking from a cardboard cup, and one lady police officer, composing text whilst in a slow moving queue going past my vantage point, unfortunately, my ipad was in the boot of my car, around the corner, but next Friday, when I'm in the laundrette, things will be different!

yep. whilst stiffer penalties is a step forward, as has been mentioned in the other related thread. things wont change much. firstly, because there's not enough plods around (and if around, willing) to enforce. secondly, its so ingrained/habitual that planks will/do still do it (or shld that be first!).

If police stood on any London corner not in uniform they would book every other driver for using a mobile phone at the wheels.

Many times I have seen drivers with their mobile in one hand filming the road while driving.

WTF???
