I'm shocked.

Do 13% - 1 in 8 of the population - really know this? Considering that the new £1 coin hasn't even been issued yet and the government publicity campaign hasn't started I'm amazed so many people knew that October 15th was the last day to use the current £1 coins. Do so many people really spend their time on the Royal Mint website? They need to get out more.

This is an article from October 2016 - although I am sure I have seen earlier notices of the new coin being introduced.

Stores that need to make changes to vending machines, local councils (parking meters) banks, post offices were apparently consulted during the design stage - sample coins have been provided to pretty much any organisation that will need to make changes.

When the new £5.00 note was being introduced - the new look £1.00 coin was also mentioned.

So, despite no actual publicity campaign, I am surprised that so few people are aware.

It didnt take too long for some of those 'trial' coins to make their way on to Ebay ! Only 200,000 of them were distributed.

The new coins are considered "trial coins" - and therefore aren't rare, or legitimate legal tender. They cannot be used in shops - and in March, will not default to official tender.

On Friday, seller "Robbiethebarge" sold his coin for £162.57, however there's no mention of how the coin was sourced.

13% isn't the number who'd heard of the new £1 coin, it's claimed by that reliable source the Daily Express to be the number of people who know that the date the current £1 coins cease to be legal tender is 15th October 2017 (that date isn't mentioned in the Metro article you linked).

That's the statistic that surprises me.
