I've read many inspiring stories on this sub-forum of people choosing to resolve their debt problems, and more inspiringly I've come across the unwavering support that other members offer to virtual strangers in their pursuits - so I've decided I wanted to share my problems, in a bid to help others.

My problem concerns the issue of being chased for a debt that you simply do not owe i.e. a debt that arose because you were victim of fraud.

For almost a decade I was harassed by a Bank and various Debt Collection Agencies (to the point I had a nervous breakdown) for a ~£3,800 debt that a fraudster had racked up in my name.

Now, in 2017 I've nearly had my issues resolved (there are still costs that I have incurred that are to be reclaimed) and I wanted to share my story on how I did it.

Hi BankFodder, thanks for your response. Here's my story (as briefly as possible).

After the fraudster/third-party racked up these debts in my name I made sure I contacted Lloyds Bank and did everything possible to convey to them that I had not incurred these debt.

For a couple of years the issue went back and forth until Lloyds Bank admitted that I did not owe the debt, and confirmed to me in 2009 (then later again in 2010) that I was not to be chased for this debt, and I was offered £200.00 compensation for the distress and inconvenience. At this point I assumed the nightmare had finally come to an end. Unfortunately however, it hadn’t and for another six years I was harassed by Debt Collectors and even the Bank who demanded payment for this debt I clearly did not owe:

i) I visited Lloyds Bank branches, called and wrote to the Bank on multiple occasions in the intervening years to plead my case, to no avail.

ii) I contacted each Debt Collection Agency on multiple occasions to state that the original creditor (Lloyds Bank) had confirmed to me that I was not the debtor.

Despite of all this, I did not succeed in stopping the harassment and until 2016 I continued to receive demands for payment. These actions by Lloyds Bank and the various Debt Collection Agencies had a fairly considerable financial and emotional impact on me and my family.

After obtaining a copy of the Bank’s internal notes file on my account I was able to view their actions in respect of this debt and see that on various occasions when Lloyds Bank were contacted by Debt Collection Agencies about the debt the Bank failed to deal with the matter in the correct manner.

HOW I EVENTUALLY SOUGHT TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE

By sending a formal and strongly worded ‘Letter Before Action’ to the CEO of Lloyds Bank.

The Bank offered £1,000 in partial compensation to me as a result, and sought to finally rectify some of its previous actions. Attached on my website a copy of the letter I was sent by Lloyds Bank, offering me £1,000 in compensation.
