The sale of rail tickets is to undergo a complete overhaul to stop passengers being ‘ripped off’ and to make the cost of journeys cheaper and easier to understand.

Passengers will be offered the cheapest available ticket for a through journey, without having to compare if it would be cheaper to buy individual tickets for each section of the route run by different rail operators, as at present.

And travellers will be shown the best available price for a journey, regardless of whether they are buying a return ticket or two single tickets.

Rip-off rail fares to be overhauled in favour of cheaper alternatives

Single-leg pricing to be introduced for some journeys to make it simpler for passengers to know if they would be better off buying two single tickets or a return

The trials are due to start in May on selected routes, including CrossCountry, Virgin Trains' east and west coast services and East Midlands

Apparently they are also going to make the ticket machines more user friendly :)

If you travel by train in a country that is of a decent size you pay a flat rate for the mileage covered except on short commuter runs. In this country you get charged what the rail co's think they can get away with, hence the price of a ticket to Gatwick from London being more than the price of a ticket to Three Bridges, the next stop down the line. Likewise Luton aiport is more expensive than going to Luton itself from London. Brighton is more expensive than Worthing becasue more people want to go there and so forth.

Where I live all the tickets to London are the same price regardless which station you board the train from on the Hastings service. Why then cant I go to Hastings for free?
