Hi, I have just been banned from all Tesco stores for life and had my key fob taken off of me.

I was using the click and scan device and had not realised an item had not scanned. The security guard stopped me as i was leaving the store (in a panic as I thought my phone was sitting in the centre console of my car).

I was taken through to the back room and had my photo taken (without me knowing), had my driving license copied and my key fob removed from my possession.

The lady said she was about to finish her shift and she didn't really want to call the police. I explained that I had not realised it hadn't scanned.

The outcome was that she told me I was banned and that I would receive a Civil recovery fine.

My questions are

1) how much would the fine be and do I have to pay it?

2) what happens if I don't pay it?

3) how would they stop me from visiting other stores? do they get in touch with all my local ones?

4) really silly but due to having saved all my vouchers for years will I know lose them as I no longer have a key fob?

Hello and welcome to CAG.

Others who know more than me will answer your questions about the ban, but I can answer questions 1 and 2.

It isn't a fine, only the police or a court can impose that and you say the police weren't called. It's unlikely they will get involved now. No, you don't have to pay it, think of it as a speculative invoice.

If you don't pay, they will probably write a few scary but meaningless letters to you. When/if they do, you come back and tell us and we explain to you why you don't need to do anything.

You made an honest mistake from what you say, don't beat yourself up over this.

My best, HB

Hi and welcome to CAG.

How much was the item that didn't scan? Did you pay for the rest of your shopping? I find it rather disturbing that security guard would ban you over one item.

I suggest a formal complaint to the Head Office demanding an apology for the behaviour of their wannabe copper.

As for the 'fine'. There won't be one. You will get a speculative invoice from a company called RLP. You do not need to pay them anything-ever!

They will try and persuade you that they have a right to your hard earned. Only Tesco can and they don't bother so no comeback.

They don't go away easily so expect quite a few letters and then a few more from a debt collector who have even less power than RLP (that would be none!)

Even if a ban stayed, after a few months, they won't even recognise you and even if they did, all they can do is demand you leave.

Keep a hold of the vouchers for now and see what transpires.

Lucky you! You can use Asda, Sainsburys, etc now. As HB tells you, a bunch of chancers will now attempt to extract money from you. DO NOT PAY!

Nothing will happen if you don't pay. Your photo is not gonna be on a wall in every Tesco store and why would you wantto go back? They have loads of better competitors imo.

Silverfox beat me to it.

I only want to go back there cos I drive through the car park 3 times a week and it's an easy store for me to do my shopping.

No, they kept the key fob and told me it would be cancelled as I was no longer welcome to shop in their store.

Ah so this is something to do with the check out in the store and not your car key ? Apologies, misunderstood.

Its prob an over zealous guard looking to push up his stats. Theyre not tesco employees so even if they do things wrong, theyll just be moved to another place. Thats why they have no real ethics, or at least a lot of them.

Banned from all Tescos for one error with the self-scan? That seems either heavy-handed or not quite right. Never had any issues with them before?

Having used self checkouts (not the hand held scanner) it is very easy to miss an item.

That is the reason I said to complain. Tesco offer the Clubcard points and now that they have removed the fob, the OP won't be able to use it and I suspect that the vouchers will have been cancelled too.

How many times do we see cashiers swiping the same item through the scanner because the bar code didn't read properly.
