Less than a quarter of couples eligible for marriage tax allowance are bothering to claim it, according to HM Revenue and Customs

The allowance - introduced in April 2015 to incentivise marriage - is worth £220 in 2016/17

.

However those eligible can also back-date a claim for last year, meaning £432 can be claimed in total.

Out of 4.2m couples who could claim that amount, only 1m have done so, despite an HMRC advertising campaign.

Marriage tax allowance lets one half of a married couple transfer part of their tax-free allowance to their partner.

However one of the partners must not be earning more than £11,000 - the personal allowance - while the other must be paying income tax at the basic rate.

thats why they dont automatically do the adjustments, they know that people cant be bothered or dont know how to. Also, when you do apply they dont send out the forms at the frirst time of asking and dont acknowledge its receipt, just reset your tax code when they feel like it.

Married Couple's Allowance

link removed

You maybe also want to give the link to the marriage allowance, which is incidentally something completely different from the married couple's allowance. I would post the link to it, but I don't have enough posts, so you all have to find out by yourselves  (hint: google for marriage allowance - first hit at gov.uk is gold).

We recently applied for this, hubby received his new tax code & a cheque for £212 for tax year 2015/16, nothing as yet for tax year 2016/17.

Applied online for both lots backdated, so we'll see wether we receive the £220 or not.

Assuming you're still eligible in 16/17, you should get your cheque but that can't be done until that tax year can be reconciled. This can happen once HMRC gets your husband's P60 (P14, if we're being technical) and P11d statement of benefits if applicable.
