Well this doesn't happen every day: Amazon has announced a 'critical' software for the Kindle which, unless downloaded by a certain date, will render your e-reader essentially unusable.

This article was sent to me earlier today, I can find no other information - Amazon hasnt made contact with me nor do I see anything on their website ?

Depends on the model of your kindle and if youve registered it in regards to getting an email from amazon. It seems the old versions ( 2012 and older) are the ones that are affected.

Any advice i give is my own and is based solely on personal experience. If in any doubt about a situation , please contact a certified legal representative or debt counsellor..

I had the same email message so I rang Amazon to check it wasn't a spoof. The customer services guy confirmed that the email was in fact from them and that I needed to follow the instructions for the upgrade.

My keyboard kindle is still working and that is pre 2012... I would treat anything printed in the Huffingtonpost with caution...they blow the slightest thing up into a major incident.

There has been a normal update for software on the Kindle to bring in a few changes but nothing that will 'disable' the machines if not updated.

Ellen, I didnt receive an email - I just had the link sent by a friend. I plugged both Kindles in and did exactly as they said to sync and check - but message said nothing found !.

Kindles for OH and me are from around 2009 I think ! So probably nothing to worry about.

I do like reading a "real" book and never thought I would switch to the Kindle.

My main problem is that I read loads of books and currently have just over a 1000 on the kindle. Hubby is desperately trying to catch up

There are also loads of new authors who appear only to write for Kindle readers.

I keep the kindle for novels and buy my reference/craft books as the "real deal" :)

I dearly love a 'real' book, however I can only hold on to an average hard back for about 10 minutes, so whilst a kindle is second best, it's still better than nothing.
