Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
I joined A&L last year tempted by the bounty payment, a promise of a quick and easy transfer process and the fact that the product looked much better than my existing RBS ac, although the customer service at my local branch had always been oustanding.
As well as A%L taking months to complete the transfer, there were two complications...
1. My employer didn't act upon instructions to pay salary into new account for two months. First time A&L told me it had probably come too late for their system so I didn;t both to follow it up.
2. RBS took 24 days after receiving instruction to transfer my £2,000 balance - which then had to go through clearance (yes, even a bank-to-bank cheque!).
Due to all this - and the fact that A&L took on all my DDs etc weeks before completing the transfer process - I went over the £1,000 overdraft limit and despite my pleas when I spotted the problem just before leaving the country for a few days for this not to happen, payments including my mortgage were refused and charges well over £100 have been charged.
Just received a terse written response to my complaint. All charges will stand as they acted within their specified transferring period.
I intend to use the Group's letters to ask for my money back but also have third party charges, eg a bounced cheque, mortgage co charges etc.
I'm also concerned about the effect on my credit rating.
Any thoughts, experiences or observations would be much appreciated.
Welcome .
first make sure you have another account open just incase the bank decide to close this one.
As for your credit ratings do you mean if you take them to court ? this will not affect your credit ratings it will only affect them, in a good way, when you get your money back and pay any bills that are outstanding that are already affecting your ratings.
As for 3rd party charges without knowing exactly what ones you mean these also sound like penalty charges , so unlawful .As I said though you need to say exactly what 3rd party charges you mean.
please keep us posted on your progress.
I'm very relieved I haven't broken any forum rules with this post - had to get it off my chest!
Discovering these charges are not legally enforceable is very fortuitous for me at this time but I'm also really narked that they don't see it as their responsibility to ensure the transfer process goes smoothly.
I do have a Smile current account I never use (got some free wine for opening it) so will be ready to transfer if necessary.
Just one other thing - they've sent me the leaflet telling me how I can appeal to the Financial Services Ombudsman I think it is. I'm planning to do this, regardless of whether I get my charges back. Have other members achieved any success going down this route?
Just got letter back from A&L saying that although they deny my claim that the charges are illegal (from slightly adapted template letter off this site), they accept that some of this may have been beyond my control and have refunded all charges. They repeat that their charges are legal and will apply in future. Many thanks to all for your help.

When the Liberals and Conservatives were in opposition they both agreed that banks should pay back high bank charges to customers. Nothing seems to of happened since they came into power as a coalition. PPI insurance has been sorted now they should turn their attention to bank charges and help customers get exorbitant charges refunded.

I only had two other charges, £25 (I think) to mortgage company and £10 which my physio had to pay for an unpaid cheque. My old bank, RBS, offered to pay ALL my charges because of the delay in switching my account so I'm going to ask them to refund me for them. However, I do have some more work to do regarding old credit card charges. Now to tackle them!
