Hi

I am at present in the process of claiming for a theft of fishing equipment from

my Garage .

I contacted the insurers and they said that they deal with a major angling company

and that they would put my claim through them.I explained that this company

had very little to do with the type of fishing I do and that some of the equipment was

not of the quality of the gear I had lost.

They are now saying that the amount covered by my insurance is £2000

and they equipment offered by the angling company to the amount of £2000

does not cover all I have lost.

My question is can I ask a different company be used.

or can I ask for the claim to be paid in cash so that I cam make better deals

with different companies to get all I have lost back

I must say that I had no documentation for the items lost

I have moved your thread to Insurance rather than Legal, so that you are more likely to get appropriate advice.

How much are you claiming is the value of the items stolen?

Does the policy have a valid £2000 limit for those items in its terms?.

You may be facing one or both of the following problems:

a) being under-insured, and

b) insurer's chosen supplier offering poorer value than market rates

Identifying which (or both) apply will help with advice ....

The £2k amount will be the limit for losses from outbuildings.

The Insurers replacement company will be able to obtain any brand of fishing equipment.

I think the problem you are facing is that the £2k limit does not cover your loss and you think you can shop around better than the Insurers replacement company.

In this situation, I would suggest that you provide the Insurers with details of your own suppliers replacement items. If you have a local tackle shop, you may be able to obtain a discount and they can provide you with an estimate confirming their price. The Insurers may be willing to settle by cash to you or cheque to your suppliers. Insurers are reluctant to settle by cash for the full value of claim, as part of their fraud prevention procedures.

We could do with some help from you.

Thanks for the replies

I have been told by a retailer that he was approached by an insurance company

to supply items but they were asking 30% to 50% discount he refused

I have estimated that the retail value of the equipment lost is approx £2500

So if I could deal with a local supplier I should be able to negotiate replacement

of all the equipment especially for cash.

Is it true or false that if you request a different supplier or cash the insurance company

is duty bound to agree to your request

Finally when my garage door was damaged another break in happened and they stole

a 240v generator .

Prior to the break in I had informed the company that the door was not secure

but they ignored the warning they now say that this is part of the same claim

and the cost will be involved in the £2000

Surely it should be a seperrate claim??

You will only be able to get a cash settlement, if you come up with estimates from local suppliers you can do a deal with. Insurers won't want to settle by cash, without you supplying estimates.

If the generator was stolen on a separate occasion, it is a separate claim with the relevant policy excess to come off.
