Hi,
I am just starting the battle to reclaim all our bank charges with Barclays Bank after years of suffering at their hands.
I have sent the letter requesting the statements and have received them quite quickly!!
I have gone through the whole 8 years that they have supplied me with on our 2 accounts that we had with them and highlighted all the charges we have incurred over that time.
The total amount was a lot more than either of us anticipated and gives us even more of a boost to follow it up as we have nothing to lose only to gain!!
I now have the big job of completing the spreadsheet with all the charges and dates.
This is a great sight and really helpful, thanks.
I will keep you posted on our progress.
Remember that charges older than 6 years are barred by the statute of limitations. Unless you fancy joining the pioneers and challenging the statute on the grounds that the banks have deceived you. Limitations falls if a judge agrees with this. There are some people doing this at the moment...

I am not a lawyer. All advice is merely my own opinion. Nevertheless, I've won £4675 so far!
Tip my scales if you like my advice
First of all it may be better to start a new thread in the Barclays section of the site. You will be amazed at the number of other Barclays claims there. You may be moved there anyway.
Secondly, the banks regularly read these pages for information which may be of use to them. I would suggest that you think up a nickname and use that from now on.
I am waiting for my court date at the moment. My claim was served in early July. I am claiming nearly £5,000 from the fatherless chillen. More information can be found on my thread. Just search my user name and you will find it.
Anyway you are in the best place to win your claim against Barclays. We will all bend over backwards to help you. Good luck and I'll maybe see you over in the Barclays section.;-)
Thanks for replies. Advice was very much appreciated and needed!!!
I will only try to claim for the last 6 years now as I had misunderstood the 6 year rule. I presumed it was because banks only had to keep 6 years of your bank records so that was mostly why people only backdated that far back.
I think I already have enough of a battle on my hands trying to do the work to reclaim for the 6 years rather than a bigger battle for the 8.
I will try to start another thread with the Barclays section but it took me long enough to master doing this one that I will have to see how to get there.
It is going to be such a mammoth job compiling the spreadsheet with all the charges that step 2 could take a bit longer, but hopefully well worth it.
I still have a lot of work and read up to do but will get there.
Thanks for the support!
I have been advised to post a thread within the Barclays Bank section as that is the bank we are going for on our reclaim of charges.
We have two accounts with them one that is now closed, mainly due to the way they treated us with regards to Bank Charges etc and another that is current at present. Both accounts have suffered charges and when we received our statements and went through with the highlighter pen we were amazed at how much the charges have accrued to.
It is enough to be more than prepared to follow it up and try to reclaim our money. We have nothing to lose, although it is a very daunting thought.
I think the work starts here as we now have to compile the spreadsheet with all the charges we have incurred through the years which is a mammoth task.
Please read the FAQ's and Step-by-Step guidelines together with lots of threads. If you have questions, please feel free to ask here in your thread. There's a lot of kind souls here to help everyone through.
In fact, bookmark those two links above to your favourites along with this one and you then have an easy reference guide.
There's so much information here that you should, if you see something of interest and relevant to you, bookmark it too for the future.
Good Luck

We closed our one account nearly a year ago now because of all the problems we had with Barclays.
When we list our charges can we go back six years from the closing date of the account to try to reclaim or does it need to be 6 years from the date you log your claim?
It's from the date you log your claim I'm afraid. Pre 6 years is uncharted Territory but there are one or two challenging those as we speak so we'll have to wait and see the outcome of those.
Another thing, we are trying to encourage people not to use their actual names as user names on this site. Can you think of something and PM me by clicking on my user name. I'll get it changed for you.

We have the prelim letter ready to send out to Barclays Bank along with our spreadsheet of all the charges going back to November 2000.
We have altered the letter accordingly but I have read in the 'step by step' about not including the interest charges at this stage.
Does this mean we should not include the amount automatically calculated by the spreadsheet in the letter and also delete the interest information on the spreadsheet that we are going to send with the letter or just keep the details there but state in the letter that we are not claiming the interest calculated at this stage?
Sorry to sound thick but it will also sort our disagreement out on the subject!!!
My excuse is that it is very late and I am tired but I am desperate to get this next stage sorted as it has been hanging over us for a couple of weeks now. I am also very conscious of getting it right because of the loopholes that you can fall in to and fail from overlooking something.
If you are using the excel basic spreadsheet, the 8% interest that the spreadsheet automatically calculates is only claimable when you file a court claim, so only send a prelim letter with the actual charges you have been charged.
Just to confuse things a little though, you can claim back interest that th ebank has charged you 'as a result' of chrages taking you over your agreed limit, but that does take a long time to sort out, if you think its worth it, there is an advanced spreadsheet in the templates library which willhelp you with this, but i've not bothered as it doesnt add up to much and it can just confuse matters somewwhat.
Not sure how much it will have amounted to but I am with you about giving it a miss.
To be honest if I was able to get back the charges that we have been able to claim for (back to nov 2000) I will be more than happy about that.
Here's hoping!!!
We have received a reply from Barclays after sending out our preliminary letter with a copy of all our charges.
It reads they are sorry blah, blah, blah and that they will look in to our concerns as quickly as possible but no later than 7th December 2006, which will be a month from the date of our letter. They ended the letter 'thanks for bringing this to our attention' which I know will be a standard reply but it did make me giggle!!!
Just wondered if I should leave it at that for their reply or still go ahead sending the second letter after 14 days. I am worried I will fall in to a trap that a couple of people have and blow it on some minute mistake they overlooked that the banks are obviously aware of as it is quite mind blowing anyway.
If this is your real name, then perhaps you should consider re registering because bank staff are employed to do nothing else and note details about their bank and if they can realte to you, then it affect the progress of getting yourassets back.
If i am wrong in this, accept my apologies
It is prudent to register using a nickname rather than your real name.
Regarding your original question, this is a time wasting tactic employed by the banks, do not be fooled, send your letters according to your own timetable, not theirs.
iGroup (GE Money) - AoS Filed late, defence late, amended defence also late despite extra time requested and granted. Vanquis - Claim issued, no AoS or Defence received
Not been around for a couple of weeks as life been more hectic than usual.
Anyway, I sent our first prelim letter at beginning of November and got a reply saying we would here before 5th December. I was supposed to go ahead and sent my second letter regardless to this but we have been so busy did not manage to get around to it.
Well we received a letter yesterday saying the usual they don't agree but out of a gesture of goodwill they are willing to offer us £850, in Full and final settlement, which is half of the amount of charges with interest added. That's not too bad really but we had another account with them that had higher charges (nearly £3,000) that we have also claimed for but because the account was closed just under a year ago they are saying they are not interested in looking at that one at all.
Obviously they are trying to dangle carrots in front of our nose as we have been promised if we accept the money will be in our account in a weeks time (just in time for Christmas), but I am not sure how we stand with the account that is now closed.
Can anyone advise us as to whether they are talking rubbish about not entertaining that account because of it being closed? I was under the impression it didn't matter whether the account was still active or not. The only reason we closed that account was because of the charges we kept getting from them as it was getting absolutely ridiculous.
Any advice would be appreciated as we didn't expect an offer as quick as this and it has stumped us a bit.
