Hi all

I'm having grief with ebay at the moment - won't bore you with the details. It is a nightmare to contact them, as anyone knows who's ever tried... they don't seem to have a phone number, and searching round on the net, the odd one that does leak out as public knowledge is very quickly disconnected. I'm not sure of the legalities of that? I thought that any business operating online and taking payments for services HAD to have a phone number for complaints / problems?

Anyway, after a lot of searching around, I have found the following information. Before moderators panic and remove this post, I stress this is PUBLICLY AVAILABLE INFORMATION from the companies house website. It has cost me a couple of quid to get it, but it is in the public domain, so no panic about data protection issues please!

ebay UK limited registered address:

EBAY (UK) LIMITED

CARMELITE

50 VICTORIA EMBANKMENT

BLACKFRIARS

LONDON

EC4Y 0DX

company number is 03726028

There are 3 directors, 2 based in the USA and one here in jolly old england. His details are:

[deleted]

Not surprisingly, there are no phone numbers listed for ebay or carmelite or tjg sectretaries (ebay's company secretary - all based at the victoria embankment address), and mr McCullum's phone number is ex-directory.... ebay HATE being contacted by mere **** like us paying customers!

Perhaps any budding miss marples out there can add more info?

I have put many appeals in, but ebay are not at all interested, basically. ebay are only interested in the seller as they are the ones they make the money from. Hence me finding out their address so I can send legal notices to them.

Hi veryannoyed

Been there with good ol' ebay!!

I managed to contact them on 08707 307191.

Word of advice - don't choose an option which can easily tell you what to do on ebay site to resolve it - go for one where u need to speak to someone - then you can get transferred through to correct department.

Good Luck

Foxy ;)

I've been trying to get a refund on an overbilling to the tune of about £420 for more than 3 months and they keep sending me the same kind of automated, ultra-polite, totally worthless responses. Who can I turn to for some support in this? Thanks, J

BTW Foxy, that number got me through to PayPal - are they one and the same?

This is their UK number 020 8605 3000

Use option 3 but you will only get through to a guy on reception who will not put you through to anyone else in the company. If only I had the money to really follow this through but there again if I had money would I be using eBay?

I am an ebay seller and have had massive problems over past few months. Imy ebay name is same as name on here and now unable to list until they decide when i can again, asked why and appealed more than 30 days ago by email but no reply. I got some indian chap on phone and her fobbed me off after 30 mins of my call and told me they would only accept letters in own handwriting, so asked for a transcript of conversation under data protection law and will wait and see what happens. so not all sellers get it easier. thanks for the useful addresses will see what happens when they arrive.

Sorry everyone! I completely forgot about my posting!.

Yes I did get it resolved!. After my last call i spoke to a chap in Ireland, apparently the chap i thought was in India was actually on the same office as the Irish chap in Dublin. How stupid did I feel!

Within 48 hours of me advising him, I had the directors address and a leter was sent my account was re-instated.

Good luck to everyone in a similar situation. I believe from this month no negatives or neutral can be left-dont know when though, this hopefully will solve the problem.

Ebay. Contact info ... nil. Customer service, nil.

got a ruddy intrum justita letter this morning from ebay for an unpaid

Had same a few weeks back, I was livid. Cos I'd paid fees up to date before it was sent. Basically, Ebay's admin eg record keepig, talking to even their own depts is shockingly shoddy. I contacted IJ, they had the cheek to tell me to contact Ebay or send them a bank statement as 'proof' I'd paid. Contact them by email I was told. Anyway, told Ebay to get it sorted pronto in several very long emails, messages; all took days to reply to, naturally. Unless it's a 'you are paying us' type thing they haven't got the resources to answer more quickly. Outlined how unhappy I was with Ebay, that they'd passed on my alleged debt to a DCA, a whole 7 days AFTER it was paid.

What I didn't like was Ebay gave no warning as to 'when' this would happen and just did it anyway.

Seems to be sorted now. Either way, IJ can get lost. I am not paying them the small amount as Ebay have received it. Ebay's excuse was that it can take a week for the info to get passed by them to IJ. But IJ's excuse was that they hadn't been instructed by Ebay it had been paid. Basically, this was almost two weeks AFTER it had been paid! So, load of waffle methinks!

Loads of people, as you may know already, have had the same treatment from Ebay and IJ on this score. I googled, got dozens of postings both on Ebay's own forums and other sites.

As to Indian Call centres ... same using their 'Live Chat'. Waste of time. Same stuff you'll get over the phone. Give them your ID, what it's about and, hey presto, when they suddenly realize a whole FIFTEEN minutes AFTER and say 'I see you are registered in the UK site' in other words we can't help you, go away! Thing is, soon as you give them your user ID they have that info eg where you are registered at their fingertips in front of them. Utterly useless.

Besides which, which I also told IJ, if I hadn't paid my fees then my account would remain unsuspended. Simple logic when said and done. But DCA's don't have any.

In the end Ebay told me to ignore what IJ had said. Hope it ends there because if it doesn't there's gona be a whole load of more emails to them at Ebay. Really apalled, disgusted with them for doing this. Chasing me for a debt I'd already paid! Ridiculous! Now, they blame their 'automated systems' for all this. Natch.

The no negs from sellers to buyers applied from 1st May.

I have since learned that the amount IJ claims you owe is actually a well known [problem].

Ebay are currently chasing me for the miniscule sum of £1.16. Whilst a small amount which I could pay I refuse to on the basis that I havent sold anything for over six months and they seem unable to give me clarification as to where they got the figure from. Ahhh I give up I shall await the DCA.;)

Acutally moderators, the names and addresses of directors are also public domain items (by law).

Currently the UK MD is Mark Lewis

President of Market Operations is Lorrie Norrington

and

Senior VP Europe is Douglas McCallum.

Ebay is actualy run from Luxembourg, presumably to circumvent UK laws about e-commerce and geographic addresses.

Their so calle "Trust and Safety" team, are equally secretive, operating fro a PO box in Ireland.

EBay do have a phone number for what they call "Customer Support", it is 020 8080 2105.

As with "trust and safety" eBay seems to have its own dictionary, and you will find that what they call "support", has parallels with the way that Mr Hitler used to support the Jews.

Hi ClothKap, as you know so much about ebay, can you give me a contact address where I can send an email??

Cheers

Why are you pursuing ebay then?

They are a hosting company for online sales, the contract and payment, is between you and your seller/buyer.

Not very secret - they operate from Ebay's European HQ in Clondalkin (west Dublin). They hacked me off royally, and I went to their building and refused to budge until a manager dealt with me. Their on site security staff were preparing to eject me from the building until I treatened to handcuff myself to the reception desk....

I think you are legally wrong because of the recent changes to Ebay's 'check-out' process.

In the old days, buyers went to Paypal to pay the seller.

In these new, and frankly more convoluted, days Ebay manages the entire payment process. Ebay does this because it is paranoid about loosing potential listing fees and selling fees income.

This is what happens:

(a) buyer buys

(b) Ebay invites/suggests/encourages the buyer to pay

© Ebay then manages the entire payment process as if it was a Merchant. Ebay does, unlawfully in my opinion, exchange your Ebay information with Paypal using strange cookies 'co.uk' - not Ebay.co.uk or Paypal.co.uk but just plain 'co.uk'.

In English law (I'm definitely not a lawyer) at the very least Ebay is acting as the seller's agent by arranging and supervising - actually absolutely controlling every aspect of - the entire payment process.

You can not pay the seller directly. Paypal will object if you try to pay for an Ebay item and you click the radio button for 'Ebay Payment'. Ebay will and does block you having details of the seller's Paypal account.

Ebay, being just another of those arrogant (in my opinion of course) US of A companies has yet to understand it can not keep taking the money then deliberately preventing the buyer get lawful satisfaction from Ebay as the seller's agent.

Incidentally the London Ebay fax number is 020-8605 3001 and you can get the directors names and addresses from Companies House for just £1.

Any skilled proficient web programmers (plus MySQL clustering experts and PHP fans) want to work for nothing initially building a competitor to Ebay? It will take 2 years to make something faster, better and more consumer friendly than slow, bureaucratic and cumbersome Ebay. The hardest thing is getting a suitable domain name and then getting domains all around the world. Initial enquiries to ebay (edit)

There is a BIG misunderstanding by many - eBay included.

We all agree that eBay is "just" a portal for many to sell and buy products. As such, for many years, eBay got away promoting certain practices, hence declining any responsibilities.

Should something go wrong with purchasing or selling a product, eBay has tried to put in place new (safety) directives. The problem however, often, is not the buyer or the seller but EBAY themselves.

Since 2003 I have been writing to them and visiting them in Richmond to combat their injustices, but got me nowhere. For some reason they seem to be protected by Trading Standards and major names from different industries.

**edited**

It doesn’t take many efforts to find thousands of complaints against eBay from people that suffered considerable losses of money too. This is often due to major cock-ups that they do with accounts or PayPal transactions. I lost money to PayPal because PayPal messed up a payment to me and lost money to eBay because they refused to refund to me my fees on inconsiderate actions taken up by them.

eBay does not reply to mail or email. They have set up what they consider “fair” questions and anything else outside these parameters is hardly considered. Hence it is not unusual to feel like we are all fighting a ghost. Despite my arguments with them since 2003 (via local MP, OFT, Monopoly Commission, European Parliament etc.) eBay is still not accountable for – TO ANYONE!?!?

Conspiracy theories can be fun and I wonder why we have, all over Europe (and many parts of the world), an American Company that knows our email addresses, telephone numbers, home address, work address, (EBAY) credit card number(s), bank account number(s) (PAYPAL) – read our messages and listen to our conversations (SKYPE)?

...and your point is....???

Apart from being a tad libel....I think the point is that they feel ebay is quite wrong in the way it operates.....

Hi I too have issues with ebay, one of them being that they would not give me a UK address to write to when I stated that I wanted to send them court papers. They gave me a P.O. box address in Southern Ireland. I wrote 3 times stating that last time I looked outhern Ireland was not part of the UK.

Not to be fobbed off I looked up their address (free) on Companies House website and found the following address (it would appear that they have moved!)

Ebay (UK) Ltd

5 New Street Square

LONDON

EC4A 3TW

And PayPal (Europe) Ltd are registered at:

Whitaker House

Whitaker Avenue

Richmond

Surrey

TW9 1EH

Any company phone no that ends -000 is likely to be a switchboard. I have had some success in the past by trying various different options until I get a human being so if the last four are 3000 you could try the methodical approach going -3001, -3002 etc. I usually try a more random approach 3007, 3010 etc. This has worked for me with Tiscali and 3 mobile. The people who answer the phone could be in any department but they do put you through to those who can help as they're not customer service monkeys and assume you have direct line numbers.
