    Smile direct debit returned

i have been arguing it out with my bank that i should not have to pay for a returned direct debiticon on the basis that it does not cost them anything to process. it just the same as sending some one an email and it being returned because the inbox is empty. how many times have we been charged for a returned email or how many times have we been charged for sending a email?
my bank is not very happy. neither am i. at least i am getting on its nerves ?
