Hi,

My house insurance with Santander auto-renewed in September 2011. Being new to house owning, I didn't realise this could happen and took out a policy with Deeside/Aim for the same period. As it was paid by instalments, and a very busy year, I didn't notice :(

I became aware of this when the renewal came around and contacted Santander. They said "we call this a dual insurance and will honour a 50% refund", They asked for Deeside's schedule and then refunded me 50%.

I contacted Deeside, who asked for Santander's schedule and seemed to be going along with the situation. Since then they have been "palming me off".

Are they obliged to give me a refund?

Thanks for any help.

It is customary practice of Insurers and is something the ABI expect, but there is no specific FSA rule, apart from treating you fairly. Chase this up with Deeside to find out what the delay is. It may be that they don't issue the refunds and are waiting for the underwriters.

We could do with some help from you.

Thanks for the reply uncle.

They said they were going to pay, then delays, now they denied ever offering and are escalating to management :|

I've tried the friendly approach, but I should of known better :-)

Update:

Deeside/Aim insurance eventually got back to me, and said they are taking £55 off the refund as a cancellation fee, leaving me with £17 :-(

Can they technically call it a cancellation if the insured term had already finished?

Do you think this is fair?

They can only deduct the cancellation fee for cancelling the policy during the period the policy is in force. Sounds a bit dodgy to me. Complain and involve the FOS if you have to.
