Taxpayers will be forced to pay a riot damage bill that could reach £200million, it emerged last night. The little-known 1886 Riot Damages Act allows insurance companies, individuals and businesses to reclaim their losses from local police authorities, funded by the public. Police forces, already axeing thousands of jobs, could have to make even deeper cuts to meet the compensation bill.

The government may not accept this as being riot and therefore compensation will not be available from the state. I can't see them doing this, as they would be challenged in the courts.

We could do with some help from you.
