I have been sent a letter stating "Thank you for renewing tour tesco home insurance."

Apparently i have signed up to an automatic annual renewal and apparently i was sent a letter notifying me that my policy would be automatically renewed. Both of which are not true.

I've searched through all my previous documents including my policy and it does not state anywhere that i have agreed to this.

I spoke to tesco and they have stated i need to pay a £20 cancellation fee. I explained i have not signed up for an automatic renewal and requested a copy of documentation that states i have signed up for this (under the freedom of information act).

Tesco are unable to provide me with this information. They say that i would have agreed to it when i signed up for the policy online!

Very Very angry.

Any advice on what to draft in my letter to them?

Many Thanks

If they are saying that you did, then they need to provide proof of that. When was the original insurance taken out ?

When you buy most policies online, you will be signed up to an automatic renewal. You have to contact them to take it off automatic renewal.

But they should have sent you a renewal notice. Suggest that you make a complaint that renewals documents were not received and had they been received you would have stopped any automatic renewal. Advise them that you will make a complaint to the relevant Tesco Personal Finance product manager in Edinburgh if you need to, as some of Ageas* systems (*see below) appear to be failing.

In the last year Tesco have swapped from RBS Insurance to Ageas, so they may have had a few problems. All the documents have Tesco branding, but they are issued/administered by an Insurance entity. It could be that Ageas have issued the renewal documents, but when you took out the policy, RBS Insurance ran the internet system and issued the documents. This may explain why the Ageas cannot look to see what you provided on the internet, because they would not have access to RBS Insurance systems.

Hope this is clear. Can be confusing to consumers. They think they have a Tesco Insurance policy, when in fact they have an Ageas Home Insurance with Tesco branding.

We could do with some help from you.

FoI doesn't apply to private companies. Not convinced this is even a Data Protection Act issue - it's just a copy of the general T&Cs at the time which will tell you what you signed up to.
