Hello,

I have been making my council tax payments as per my liability order and I paid what I thought were my last two council tax payments for this finiancial year back in December (Dec and Jan payments).

However, last weekend my partner received an attachment of earnings order that has been sent directly to his work place.

From the amount outstanding it would appear we were also meant to make payments in Feb and Mar. I thought we only made payments 10 out of the 12 months.

My problem/query is that why haven't the council been in contact with us about the missing payments and about placing this order with his employer. Is there anything we can do about it?

If you are not sure then you should ring the Council & ask

1 - how much the Liability Order was for

2 - what arrangements and how long for were agreed & at what level of payment

3 - how much is still outstanding

You could also ask for a written statement of account. If they are correct is there any way you can clear it in one?

when you are initially billed for council tax, the council will offer you 10 instalments from april to january

however in this instance as you have missed payments which resulted in the liability order, the council appears to have set up a special arrangement for you and spread the instalments out to march to reduce the amount payable each month, this is standard practice for most councils
