Received today a set of statements going back to May 2004. The rest are scattered randomly on microfiches, apparently. I think this is codswallop and Barclaycard are trying to wriggle out of the Data Protection Act. Will do some more reading in this forum and see how others have faught this tactic. Am inclined to send my Prelim for the period I now know about (£300 charges + interest), and remind them to comply with the Data Protection Act at the same time. It's just a nonsense, as others have commented, because in the same breath as saying that all these older statements are stored chronologically and not by customer (and, by implication, that it would be like finding a number of needles in a huge haystack to retrieve mine), they say that statements from this very filing system are available for £3 a throw!

OK, just finished my research into the microfiche argument and studied the statements I do have, in detail. The missing statements relate only to my first Barclaycard, which was paid off in 2004. I got another Barclaycard a few months later, and I now have a complete record of that new card's transactions.
So I have written two letters. The first, a Data Protection Act non-compliance letter from the library, relates to Barclaycard #1. The second, a preliminary request for repayment of charges, relates to Barclaycard #2. So quite handily I can pursue each card separately. I hope to get my mother to post both letters tomorrow, Fri 8th, by Recorded Delivery while I am at work.
I am satisfied that Barclaycard do not have a leg to stand on as regards the dreaded microfiche: if the filing system is 'relevant' enough to produce statements on request for £3 a time, then surely it is relevant enough to satisfy the Data Protection Act's requirements?
