Have had a look on a few sites and the answer seems to be no she can't. As you will be returning and have not left the property permanently it is still considered your main residence and you will be counted as being liable for Council Tax.

"Long absences from Work - The Courts have decided that in such situations the time spent away from your main residence is largely irrelevant and that your main residence is where you 'intend to return' & 'where you would live if not for the demands of your work'. This is generally where your partner and children (if any) live."

"Single Person Discount - Am I entitled?

My partner is a member of the forces/works away and only comes home occasionally.

No - This property will still be deemed as their sole/main residence because there is an intention to return to the property."

However, Sheffield Council's website states that usually claims in these cases are rejected suggesting sometimes they can be paid. Some Councils seem to be stricter than others so it may be worthwhile making the application explaining the situation and see if they accept it.

Hi

Welcome to The Consumer Action Group.

I am just letting you know that as you haven't had any replies to your post yet, it might be better if you post your message again in an appropriate sub-forum. You will get lots of help there.

Also take some time to read around the forum and get used to the layout. It is a big forum and takes a lot of getting used to.

Once you start to find your way, you will soon realise that it is fairly easy to get round and to get the help you need.

It can be bit confusing at first.

Please be advised that my time will be limited for the next few weeks. Thanks for your understanding.
