In any insurance claim where accomodation is required it is unusual to meet the cost of food, as the underwriters work on the principal that if you lived at home you would need to buy food anyway. However, you can argue that you have no means of doing food preparation within a hotel, therefore the cost is much greater than it would be at home. I am not aware of any fixed rate, but that of course would very much depend on the terms of policy. Nevertheless, if there is no specific term in the contractual agreement, negotiation may be the way forward based on the aforementioned arguement

As above it all depends on the firm/how good the loss adjuster are. A home policy usually only mentions alternative accomodation cover, however if they refuse make a case to state that there is an increase in the cost, plus washing clothes etc is also increased. You should be lookng at roughly £10-15 per person, per day.

Agree with previous comment. About £15 per person per day would be about the max that would be paid. It is just a token amount towards some basic food.

We could do with some help from you.

Dear whizzkid001,

another option to consider is a holiday or similar short term self catering let. It is the most difficult time of year for this but may work out cheaper for the insurer and more convenient for you - it can get pretty depressing/tedious living in a hotel for any length of time.

There is a huge amount of personal preference here and negotiation is the key. It will also depend on how serious/time consuming the repairs are. I would say it is almost never that building works are completed to time!

regards,

Jet
