I wonder if any body can advise me on here.

I have been renting a building on a farm from the farmer and paying him cash.

I have been storing motor vehicles in the building.

The council planning people visited me and said that rates have not been paid on the building.

The farmer has told them that as the building has been used for this purpose for more than 10 years it is immune from action.

Does this mean that I will have to pay the rates for this period?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

there is no 10 yr limit for business rating purposes,(planning use and business rates are seperate issues) if the VOA decide the use is no longer agricultural then they can raise the property as a seperate assesement and the occupier would be liable for the rates due. The council have no power to list the property for business rates although they can pass the info on to the VOA.
