Hi!

Can anyone advise me on what to do about ridiculous car insurance quotes?

I live in Sutton Coldfield, B76 postcode.

My last car was a Fiat Brava 1.9 TD100 IG 9, and the best quote I was able to get for that was £485 with 4 years NCD & my last accident occurred in 25th November 2005 in atrocious weather conditions, which resulted in me misjudging an island on a roundabout, mounting the island and tilting-over a keep left sign (NO injuries to myself or any other people NOR any other vehicle involvement).

Earlier this May I got rid of the Brava as it had major engine problems, and as I was made redundant I decided to go for a Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi Executive (IG 12) valued at £1990.

I have one endorsement TS10 from 31st Jan 2008 for inadvertently going under a red X gantry on the A38(M) Distressway.

Can anyone give me advice as to why I'm getting such ridiculous quotations for my car insurance? I'm 49 years old, single, previously an Electronics Engineer but made redundant on 7th May.

The quotes I've been getting varied from £795 to over £8000 (honestly!!!) and numerous "unable to quote due to occupation" using various online comparison sites!

My friend who lives nearby has never had any quote more than £200, although he's had no recent accidents or convictions, he is 56 years old and currently drives an Astra 1.4.

Do insurers add a substantial loading for being out of work, and can anyone recommend any specialist insurer that would give me a more reasonable quote?

I'd probably be driving

Unemployed only needs to be declared if you are receiving job seekers or other related out of work state benefits. If you are not receiving any benefits, enter retired or househusband and see if this makes a difference. You would only declare to Insurers unemployed when you start to receive benefits.

Best advice is to speak to a decent local broker (avoid Swintons due to reputation) and they will have a much greater choice of Insurers to choose from. I think you will find you will be able to obtain a much more competitive premium, than if you use online comparision sites.

I would never recommend anyone who has driving offences or claims/accidents to touch comparison sites. The only choice is to phone companies or use a local broker. Comparison sites are for easy standard Insurance arrangements, where you don't need to declare anything.

We could do with some help from you.
