Just so you have the complete picture. Bought a car last November, little Metro, nothing fancy. In December it was bumped by someone in front hitting reverse at traffic lights. They admitted liability, insurance paid out for car, plus compensation, no problems. Retained car, not written off, paid for repairs out of claim. Was all running again.

This week it was broken in to and damage done to the steering. Police and insurance informed. Insurance arrange with their approved garage to take it in. Advised to clear personal belongings. I thought they were coming Friday while I was at work, got call during Friday to say Tuesday instead.

Friday night/Saturday morning the car was stolen. Was unable to move it due to steering damage, it had been parked at back of house in residents parking area. Normally kept in own yard. Contacted Police/Insurance. Cannot complete claim until Tuesday, when insurer's theft claims dept re-opens.

In the meantime, we had arranged to buy 2nd car, very similar make & model etc. Picked it up Saturday. We would retain both cars, one for me, one for wife. Both really need a car to get to/from work, both working over holiday weekend too.

So, called existing insurance company to add 2nd vehicle. No can do while a claim is pending. Called another company, after being on hold then doing all details (clocked 94 minutes on phone to their 0844 number) seems they are part of same company and cannot help either. No previous indication of this so was unaware.

Did online quote to see what came up with another company. Said I had 5 years NCD, price was reasonable but was not sure what situation was and got an online chat window up. No, cannot use NCD if already on another policy. So, took it off and re-did quote, it more than tripled in price!

Imagine, little Metro. Bought for only £200 - informed the insurance is over £900 for year. I'm over 50, wife approaching 50. Never caused an accident or anything, can't help if some tea-leaf nicks the car, and feel very upset at this.

Current insurance only £260 for year. Would have hoped that adding a second car would be cheaper, not more than 3 times the cost. The online quote, with NCD, was a pretty similar cost.

Wife works shifts, no buses at 7am Sunday when she finishes, needs car. I take 25 minutes to get to work in car, it's over 2 hours using 3 buses otherwise, and none Sunday morning.

This means I'm not able to insure new/2nd car to get to work tonight, wife stuck getting home in morning, I can't go on Sunday or Monday (bank hol) as there's no buses - it's crazy!

Any advice please?

From the above, The only thing I can suggest is getting a car that appeals less to the toe rags

Metro's always have been a theft target and as such are fairly expensive to insure.

Can you not look at something with better factory security ?

I went from a 1997 escort, 1.6 lx which was £1100 to insure f/c per year

To

2002 Mondeo ghia x, 2.0... which was £420 f/c per year, same company same address, same ncb

Ouch! - I happen to like Metro's and that's why I've always had one. Until now, I wasn't aware they were a target for theft.

As I said, usually park in the yard, wasn't able to this week due to a broken down car blocking access, so was parked in residents parking area, right in the corner, next to a BMW, a Mondeo and a van. None of those were touched.

After steering damage I had no choice but to leave car where it was, and that's where it was stolen from.

Had I seen your message earlier in the week, I may have thought twice about getting another Metro today, but was not aware of the issues. Latest purchase is parked in my yard, gates shut, mainly because I can't leave it on the road uninsured now.

Cost of car was also an important factor as we've both been out of work for a while, redundancy, and are both earning again as of this week. Bought cheap 2nd car until we can afford better. Can't afford better spec at present. Need to be able to work to do that, this is a big setback.

You state that it cost you £200...

The best thing I can say is to withdraw your Claims! You dont state what your excess is - I bet it's not £0. If it is £50 then the max you will get is £150 for the car. As you can see, with the loss of your NCD then your insurance is going to go up by more than that next year!

If the claims are withdrawn, the claims are no longer pending, then you can get an additional car added onto your policy.

Abbey - owed £3260 - Paid up.

Barclays owed £2500 - Paid up.

Halifax, Mint & Egg - next on the hit list

Dont click on the scales - I'm quite proud of my little red dot! - As the little red dot has gone - click away!!!!

The old car was £475 cost, we've had work done on it but bet that does not count towards value. Excess on that was £100. No choice but to claim if stolen?

New car £200, can't insure it for less than £900 it seems. Have to declare all claims, even if not my fault.

Can't fathom out what I can and can't do without speaking to claims dept, they're not in until Tuesday. That's the current headache.

Yes, makes sense not to claim if it will affect NCD and premium,

This is the point mate, the others the thief would of known would be harder to take. BMW, forget it unless you know what your doing with the model... Mondeo, depending on age.... even older ones 'M' reg etc are not just a break in and go, you have to bypass the immobiliser pats system... the van, same with the others

Sadly, your car was the easier target to take.

I know a bit about the various systems and what needs to be done to bypass them as I have fitted a fair few CAT1 alarm systems so have to add extra circuits, so knowing where the existing ones are is important...

I could for instance, start and drive away a 1997 escort in about 4 mins by adding a small amount of wiring to various points.

Nothing is un-take able, just depends who wants it.

True enough, but does not help the situation I have where I have another car, even if it is a Metro again, that I now can't drive as I can't insure it. Well, not for less than a whole skip full of arms and legs.

Been looking still. Best quote so far, £481 for 3rd party with £250 excess. Silly. Existing policy, £258, 3rd party, £100 excess. Diff is that I had 5 years NCD, which I can't use on a totally new policy.

All I wanted to do was add to existing policy, a pity the insurance company can't see it that way and block all attempts because there is a claim open. After all, they stand to make more money out of me....?

After the bank holiday, some news and some progress. The 1st car has been found, needs to go to be checked over the insurance company say. Took over 2 hours to get to speak to someone to give them police and recovery company info. I've no idea where the car is, when it will be looked at, if I'll ever see it again. Really filled me with confidence...

Check same insurance company on-line re. 2nd car. Quote over £1,000 if in my name. Get new quote, reverse details to put it in wife's name, comes out just under £300. Same 2 drivers, just other way round. zero no claims, declared recent claims made.

Sorry, I just can't understand how they work these things out.

Called them, they could not explain either, they suggested I may not have entered all details the same. Oh, system must have found different companies (yes, it did) - but they can't say why it was so expensive in my name but cheaper for wife.

They suggest swapping 2nd car to existing policy until we get 1st car back, took all details, then said there was a processing fee of £25. This would also apply if this was changed back when 1st car is returned.

I'm already facing a £100 excess to get 1st car back, bought 2nd car, so not really on to pay an extra £25 for what may only be a few days, then all the hassle changing it back again. Still have to insure 2nd car in it's own right at some point.

I am fast going off insurance companies! With all this hassle and rip-off prices I make no wonder there are loads of people out there driving without insurance. It is cheaper to get caught and be fined!

Just to wrap this up. First car, that had been stolen, was beyond repair. Eventually went to see it in a field full of similar vehicles that had been recovered, looked like it had been given a heck of a kicking - every panel dented, radio smashed, ariel snapped off - little swines! Nothing worth taking off it. Insurance eventually paid out £350 after excess, better than nothing.

2nd car developed a serious fault in the chassis, garage wrote that off, so out of pocket by £200 there. Bought 'as seen', you take your chance...

Taking advice from earlier, avoided Metro's and got a reasonable Kia saloon through the garage I use, had belonged to a relation that passed away, so I got it cheap enough.

It will do for a year or so, until I can afford something better. Having been out of work for ages, I'm still trying to get back on my feet, but need the car to get to work or I'd not be in a position to save up - vicious circle.

I don't hold any hope of the Police finding the thieves, or getting any compensation from the theft. It just seems so wrong that the owner is penalised by paying an excess, or a higher premium, when it's clearly not their fault that cars get stolen...

I'm thinking of putting an advert in the local paper to offer free sex change operations to all car thieves, using a rusty pair of bolt croppers - totally free if I catch them!

Here's where I need some info again, if anyone is able to help please?

The tale is above, had a car bumped last November, insurance paid out and I got it fixed. Payment was from other party's insurance. The car was stolen, eventually insurance paid out, less excess. I lost out due to excess, plus lots of work had been done on the vehicle that I still had to pay for.

OK - I now have the Kia. Insurance was changed on existing policy to suit and is due to renew soon, but what NCD do I have now? Neither incident was my fault. Had that been the case, insurance would not have paid out of course.

I agree I've made claims, but why should I accept being penalised, by loss of no claims or increased premium? I've not been advised of any loss of NCD so I'll just tick the boxes, with the same company, and see what they do I guess. I've been with them for 7 years, no previous issues.

I'm not quibbling over an increase in premium due to this being a bigger/newer car, just that I am worried they will give a quote that is a lot higher, due to the claims, or because I've lost some or all of the NCD.

Am I getting it wrong?
