Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
My neighbour got a £170 fine for unpaid tv licence, she paid the court in january in the afternoon with no problem.
The bailiff called today asking for £275 for this fine, £170 for the fine, the rest in charges, apparently the court had handed it over to the bailiffs the morning she paid it.
She is a single parent on benefits and is really worried can anyone help
many thanks
Re: fine paid but bailiff called today please help!!!
Does she still have the receipt for when she paid. If so send a copy to the bailiff's and tell them to do one. If she has paid before any letters, visits etc then that is the bailiffs problem, they have had the best part of 2 months or so.
Re: fine paid but bailiff called today please help!!!
she paid it over the phone with her bank card so has it on her bank statement. the bailiff said he knew she had paid but he was there to collect his fees. it was his first visit and she had no previous letters from them

What a pleasant problem to have - in the light of what many on this forum have that is!
As far as I am aware, and may fellow Caggers correct me if I'm wrong - a bailiff can't levy for his own fees therefore he can only act as an eminently ignorable debt collector. Suggest he goes to the small claims court. And see how far he gets.
Your neighbour can sleep easy.
However, excellent opportunity to makes some complaints as PT advocates.
Best wishes
Rae.
