Nationwide adding Charges on a un-used account - URGENT!
Hi there,
I opened up a flex account a few years ago as my main account. I since moved my account to another bank. However, a forgot to cancel two standing orders, and without realising they added monthly charges of over £70.00, now the final cost is over £2000! which they want me to pay back. As I moved house, I didn't update my address with them and they kept adding monthly charges without me realising. I spoke to them last week, and they offered my £700 to clear the charges. But I was told this offer will only last 14 days and will need to be paid within the period.
Is it worth me fighting this case? As far as I'm concerned they could see the account wasn't used for a couple of years, and this was a geniune mistake on my part and you would have thought they would let this one go.
a sort of fire-fighting role here. Hate HFC & their past compulsory PPI ethos

Any comments and help?
Many thanks!
so how long did the standing order last with them before you realised and changed it?
as they are 'offering' a reduced settlement, it shows they are on dodgy ground, but we need to know what you 'actually' owe rhem, not what they have inflated the balance too by adding unlawful charges.

Hi,
I think te SD was atempted to be taken over two years or so.
The total amount they put charge upon charge every month is £2258. But they said I will need to pay £700 within the fourteen days to write off the rest of the debt.
I don't know what to do next, as they're going pass it to a DCA next if I don't cough the £700 or go into a payment arrangement to clear the £2258 over a period of time.
Plus they've just told me a default was registered in Nov 09.
Can they do this? Is it worth me going to the fos?

Thank you - As far as I'm aware, no money was paid to the SO as I didn't use the account for months. It's when I changed my address with them I found out the hit with with the overdraft charges and non payment of the SO.
I'll send a SAR today. Shall I also go to the fos aswell?

Re: Nationwide adding Charges on a un-used account - URGENT!
Have you got any correspondence from the bank in which they claim that their charges are related to their administrative costs?
Or is there anything in their terms and conditions which explains that the charges cover their costs or that their charges are fair?
Presumably these charges were added to the unauthorised balance and incurred charges on charges?

No I haven't - This is all verbal from them. As far as the T&Cs, do you know if I can get a copy of this from 2007/08/09? Yes these charges were added to the unauthorised balance.

Haven't you seen the warnings plastered all over this site not to do your business on the phone without recording your calls?
You will need to get hold of T&Cs which appy to your accout for the period that you have had it also any correspondence or court documents which Nationwide have used to defend charges cases. Let's see what they have bee saying about their charges.
Also, can you send me an email at our admin@ account as there may be a couple of other ideas we can try
