I received this months statement today and it said:
I have never been over my credit limit and have never missed a payment on my account. My account limit is £1250 at the minute. I was a little shocked by this and called up the call centre. I was basically passed from pillar to post and eventually spoke to a manager. The manager who i spoke to said that they were going to reduce my limit due to past history on my credit file. The reason I have an initial visa card is to help build my credit history up! and like i said i've never missed a payment or went over the limit!!! And better still he couldn't advice me what it would be reduced to! To say i'm lost for words would be an understatement - i really can't understand why they would do this when I have proven to them I am responsible and a good customer.
Is anyone else in the same boat or can anyone else offer any advice.
Nat West have reduced my credit limit from 6450 to zero with an outstanding balance of 5750 - I was told by call centre that it was a fair assumption that this was done as a retalitory measure for issuing a claim o n my current account. I am not too bothered as I will be in a position ot pay this off at hen end of the month - otherwise my CRA would show a limit of zero and a balance of 5750 - butluckily it will just show as no missed payments and settled.

Hmm, could they have gotten some info about your "past history" on your credit file from somewhere else?
I don't know much about these things, but maybe a former bank of yours defaulted you and they now got that info? Did you ask them?
As far as I understand you could send your former bank/s an SAR and ask them to remove any default...
You know what, maybe you should do some reading on this site. And hopefully someone a bit more competent can help you more than I.:-|
Good luck, pangster!
Whatever I post is just my opinion, no more, no less!

I totally agree.
Truly believe they want to reduce people getting over-debt ridden, but agree that the initiatives are also to reduce bad debt.
Not in my case as I had a 6450 limit and balance was 5750, they reduced limit to zero and I see on line today they have slapped a £12 overlimit charge on! The call centre said it was a fair assumption that my facility was taken away as a retalitory measure against me claiming back charges!
Re: Barclaycard Initial Visa - reducing credit limit!
Whilst i was waiting for this call back and after my original post here - i did some digging and have found out that not only does Barclaycard now share information directly with other lenders i.e. Egg, Abbey etc they are also looking at reducing peoples credit limits to mitigate their exposure to bad debt.
They state in "This is Money" that this is behavioral data. Surely they can't swop personal data with out informing the data subject as this would be in breach of the DPA?
