Hi,

I have the following problem with my council tax.

I am renting a furnished flat and I am the only adult living in that flat. Moreover, I am spending half of the year abroad, where I consider to have my main home. Hence, I asked for a reduction of my council tax in the following way.

1) A 25% reduction because I am the only adult living at that property.

2) A possible additional reduction of 10% since it is my second home.

Now they have turned down both requests because

1) I am not entitled for the sole occupier discount since my main home of residence must be within borough. I have never heard of this condition before and would like to know whether this is actually true.

2) I am not entitled for the 10% unless I give proof of living somewhere else.

This seems to me contradictory since, on the one hand they accept that I live somewhere else but that they don't.

I would appreciate help in how to handle this.

I am clearly interested in getting at least the 25% discount.

Thanks for any help and advice.

Hi,

thanks for this. Does this actually mean if I have two homes, where I live alone. I have to pay more council tax for the second home than for my main home? This seems to be rather strange.
