Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
Apologies if this isn't the right thread but I wondered if anyone else has ha the same experience.
My husband has just got his 1st credit card with Barclaycard (and also an additional one for me). We were about to call to activate the card but heard from a friend that they give the hard sell on identity fraud etc sometimes up to 10 minutes trying to get you to purchase protection. My husband has been ill and is slowly on the road to recovery. His speech however hasn't fully recovered and he gets very nervous, jittery and stutters alot with people he doesn't know (confidence thing i suppose - although when he's stressed like this he slurs a bit too). I obviously cannot call as its in his name so was surprised by what I heard. I suppose gone are the days where you could call a number, provide your passwords and thats it! So I wrote a little script for him and phoned them to explain the situation They were sympathetic to a point although it did seem like they didn't believe it was him as he was reading it and was answering their questions slowly but then started bombarding him with the hard sell on identity theft etc at which point my husband got totally freaked, got very stuttery and couldn't asnwer any more questions and put the phone down. Cannot believe they would do this! Not sure if they actually activated the card either.
Im really upset by this. Are all CC companies like this? Surely people with speech impairments or deafness can get credit cards via an automation system that they can confirm their details without having to talk to people (a step backwards probably).
strange, must activation is automatic, ie you dial a number and go through options on the phone pad, have you rang the number, if it goes to a person then just put the phone down

rang the number, typed in the card details and waited.....woman came on and i explained the situation and she spoke to my husband to ask a few details then asked him to hold the line......then came the sell!
Hi Shaza, I have a Barclaycard and I was given the hard sell for the fraud protection. I was mug enough to take it too. How stupid - as if I wouldn't know if someone was fraudulently using my card. I'm so gullible!
Personally, I think card protection is just another money-spinner for BC and others.
If there is fraudulant use of your card or account, your liablility is limited unless you have been negligent.
New regulations have just come in whereby banks and credit cards must refund amounts taken through fraud without delay, even though the bank will not have carried out it's usual investigation.
Previously, the bank would investigate and, only then, refund if it agreed you were not responsible or involved in the fraudulent transactions.
We will have to see how quickly the banks adopt or adhere to the new reg'ns.
