Hello,

I visited London and had forgot to pay the congestion charge fee, by the time I remembered it was to late and I was told to wait for the letter of non-payment.

I now have to pay this extra charge...is there any way of getting out of this? is it like credit card charges, bank charges etc...any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Laurap

Eerr..I don't think so. I'm not aware of any legal arguement that you could use, but hey..you may be the first !

The only people who have 'got out of it' are some embassies have refused to pay as they consider it a 'tax' and therefore thay don't have to pay, although i cant really see how they can regard it as a tax but there ya go.

How can you regard it as anything other than a "tax" Andy?

All,

Apologies for hi-jacking a thread, but where is the boundary for the congestion charge. I haven't been to London for many years but will be going next week-end. I will be staying in a hotel in Golders GReen (oy veh), is this within the congestion charge area. Will travel into central London by tube. If I do have to pay the charge where do I pay it and are there any concessions for disabled drivers. Many thanks - and apologies once again.

Cheers - Scousegeezer.

As you can see, its just central London, Golders Green is quite a bit out, cheap hotels there yeah ?. Ive ended up staying there twice, one time with a g/f who went and had a boob tube round the corner..hee

There is a concession if you have a Blue Badge but I think you have to register in advance. Also be aware certain areas in central London are exempt from the national blue badge parking concessions and have their own rules which you can find in the blue badge book or online. If you travel by tube buy an Oyster card or travel card its much cheaper cash fares are excessive and a travel card gets you free bus travel to.

Because it is entirely avoidable. It should be regarded as more akin to a toll for a bridge or tunnel (or part of the M6) etc.

Nothing in this post constitutes "advice" which I may not, in any event, be qualified to provide.

The only interpretation permitted on this post (or any others I may have made) is that this is what I would personally consider doing in the circumstances discussed. Each and every reader of this post or any other I may have made must take responsibility for forming their own view and making their own decision.

I receive an unwieldy number of private messages. I am happy to respond to messages posted on open forum but am unable to respond to private messages, seeking advice, when the substance of that message should properly be on the open forum.

Many thanks for your assistance and understanding on this.

except in the example of the M6 toll, it is quite practical to get from A to B without using the toll road. If B happens to be inside the congestion area then it is impossible to get from A to B by an alternative route.

You are overlooking the voluntary element of car usage.

Don't get me wrong. I'm no fan of the CC. I live in London and have paid it three times or so and got caught out once making a silly left turn into it in error and didn't realise it until I got the PCN. But in no way do I see any credible argument that it is a tax.
