2 months ago my husband & I received letters from our council advising we owed them a sum of money for council tax for the tax year 2003/4. After speaking to the council to request documentary evidence in support of the supposed claim - a couple of days ago we finally received a statement from them detailing the amount owed and court costs - none of which we were aware of. That said, before we have had time to respond - this morning we received 14 day letters from the council advising that unless they received payment in full they would be instructing bailiffs to enforce. This letter advised that the council had obtained a liability order back in October 2003 !! Surely this cannot now be enforced, could someone please advise how long a liability order is valid for - surely a council cannot decide now to give 14 days notice for something over 6 years old?
