We bought a second hand renault in April of this year, whilt on holiday a couple of weeks ago the breaks started making a real horible noise and so we got the garage to check it out, they couldn't fix it but said the pads and disks had gone and it would be ok till we got home. A friend of ours said the car dealer should pay for this is this correct? Something about fit for purpose? x

So you bought the car in April, brakes died in July. 3 months....
Hmmm depends how much mileage you've done since buying the car, I would think the brakes only have to be mot standard at time of sale to cover the dealers back?
Did you get an 'Advisory' with the MoT certificate?
If not, go here and check it out and if it says Pads/Discs then go back to the seller and ask him to pay for replacements as he will have hidden the wear by not giving you the advisory.

There is something strange on the certificate, as when we bought the car it had 59,000 miles, the mot certificate says 17,048 miles? There was an advisory in January but nothing about brakes! x
